Aquatic foods, including fish, provide a invaluable source of income and employment to many millions globally, and an accessible and affordable nutrient-dense food source with relatively low environmental footprints. The WorldFish mission is to strengthen livelihoods and enhance food and nutrition security through improving fisheries, aquaculture and the contribution of fish to food systems. Our research traditionally focuses on the three interlinked challenges of sustainable aquaculture, resilient small-scale fisheries, and enhancing the contributions of fish to nutrition of the poor in the places where we can make the most difference.

The world’s demand for aquatic foods is expanding significantly rapidly at a time of significant and unprecedented stress in oceans and inland waters, resulting in considerable concern about the future sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture, and their ability to meet future demands. Consumer awareness on ocean sustainability, veganism and animal cruelty are also becoming drivers of change in some markets and growing investment interest in “clean meat” and “clean seafood” is ushering in new and potentially disruptive technologies. With global demand for aquatic products growing, efficient and scalable plant-based and clean seafood production is being explored as a potentially new approach for maintaining vibrant and abundant oceans without compromising food security, potentially complementing existing strategies in fisheries management and sustainable aquaculture. The growing interest in such “Alt-Seafood” investments is raising questions about the implications, impacts and advantages and disadvantages for the billion people that depend on fisheries, directly and indirectly for nutrition and livelihoods, many within the developing world.

WorldFish is seeking an intern to assist the organization conduct a data-driven analysis of plant-based and clean seafood initiatives, and their implications and the opportunities for food, nutrition and livelihoods.

WorldFish is seeking a dynamic intern to assist in an exploratory research project on plant-based and clean seafood. Leveraging existing expertise in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and global seafood demand trends, we want to know how these emerging and potentially disruptive technologies imply for the future of seafood globally, with special reference to those countries most dependant on aquatic foods for livelihoods, food and nutrition, through research and industry dialogue. The internship will contribute to the development of a potential research strategy for WorldFish in this new and emerging disruptive technology area.

Scope of Work

The scope of the work will involve conduct of literature reviews and support to a scenario-based modeling assessment to better understand the implications of growth in plant-based and clean seafood to livelihoods, and food and nutrition security, with special emphasis on the developing world. During a 6 month period, the research intern will make contributions to the following evidence-based analyses and outputs:

  • Well-articulated research questions on market trends for plant-based and clean seafood and their implications for oceans and human development, involving consultations with selected stakeholders from industry, investment, NGO and academia, to better understand market trends and growth scenarios for “alt seafood”, both plant-based and clean seafood, and to articulate key research questions related to livelihoods, nutrition and health.
  • First stage modeling of future seafood trends under alt seafood disruption, working closely with seafood modelling teams and economists, to conduct initial modeling of the future of seafood supply and demand under different trends of disruption from alt seafood.
  • Report or briefing document drawing together the research questions and first stage modeling on the implications of alt seafood, involving organization of an expert workshop and feedback into the preparation of a research strategy.

The intern will be expected to:

  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Assist in the research design of interviews across industry and selected stakeholder groups.
  • Coordinate interviews and evaluate quality.
  • Support stakeholder communication and management.
  • Analyse interviews through qualitative and quantitative techniques.
  • Prepare for the workshop.
  • Compile a report of research findings.
