The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that promotes lasting peace with justice, as a practical expression of faith in action. The American Friends Service Committee’s Internship Program is designed to engage students with the world of public service and peace and social justice issues. As an intern you will work alongside AFSC staff helping to implement current programs and achieve AFSC’s mission. You will work within a framework of a work plan and learning objectives with the opportunity to participate in activities such as client engagement and in depth research. You may work directly with clients and perform in depth research. Upon completion of the internship, you will have the opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate your experience.

Summary of Principal Responsibilities

The Social Media and Communications Intern will work with the Healing Justice Program to create social media presence, posts material and assist the Program in brainstorming social media campaigns. The intern will also train staff and volunteers on effective use of various social media platforms.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the Social Media and Communications Intern include the following:

1.    Support Healing Justice advocacy by sharing information about projects, presentations, resources, etc. utilizing social media posting across such platforms as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

2.    Design digital newsletter for quarterly distribution.

3.    Train staff and volunteers on social media outreach tools and strategies

4.    Meet regularly with supervisors including traveling between offices.

Qualifications:

1.    Strong interest in a just criminal legal system

2.    Experience in graphic and/or newsletter design.

3.    Familiarity with various social media platforms.

4.    Comfortable with spreadsheets and CRM software.

This intern will work in both our New York City and Newark, NJ offices.

Compensation: $15.00 per hour - Non-Exempt – There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
