Program Overview

The Congressional Internship is designed for AANHPI undergraduate-aged students looking to increase their experience in public policy and service. The paid internship program places interns in congressional offices and provides them with the opportunity to develop their leadership and professional skills, encourages political engagement, and fosters interests in public service careers.


Applications are now open for our 2022 Spring Congressional Internship program, which will be an in-person, 12-week internship hosted in partnership with the United Parcel Service (UPS). Our spring internship cohort will have the opportunity to gain working experience in a congressional office and in UPS’ Washington, D.C. office.  Interns will work in the UPS office 1 day per week and in a congressional office 3 days per week for a total of 32 hours per week. APAICS Spring 2022 Congressional interns cannot be full-time students during the time of the program; any course load they have cannot exceed 11 credits.

SELECTION PROCESS

The APAICS Congressional Internship Program is a highly competitive program. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee made up of program alumni, staff, and board members. Top candidates receive an invitation to interview.  Applications are scored based on evidence of leadership and leadership potential, including community involvement, commitment to public service, and ability to challenge self.

PROGRAM DETAILS & ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Compensation and Benefits
  • The grant for the Congressional Internship is $3,825. Payments are made in two $1,912.50 installments. The first payment is received at the beginning of the internship, the second payment is received at the end when all program requirements have been completed.
  • Professional work experience in a congressional office
  • Leadership development opportunities, networking, access to APAICS alumni network and more
  • Domestic round-trip transportation to Washington, D.C.
  • Furnished housing in the DMV area for the duration of the internship.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Work a minimum of 32 hours a week
  • APAICS Spring 2022 Congressional interns cannot be full-time students during the time of the program; any course load they have cannot exceed 11 credits.
  • Attend a one-day orientation 
  • Attend professional development events
  • Complete weekly journals
  • Submit a program evaluation at the end of the internship
  • Comply with APAICS policies regarding work performance and personal conduct

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must currently be undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited educational institution.  
  • Be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or individuals who are legally authorized to work full-time without restriction for any U.S. employer and who possess lawful evidence of employment authorization. International students on F-1 or M-1 visas are not eligible.
  • Note: Individuals who are seeking consideration under the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival” (DACA) policy must possess an Employment Authorization Document at the time of application that is valid throughout the program.
  • Family members of the APAICS Board of Directors or National Advisory Council are prohibited from participating in any APAICS programs.
