Commitment


We are seeking an intern to work part-time at the National Lawyers Guild Office at 558 Capp Street, San Francisco. If you cannot be available 20 hours a week, please let us know how many hours you would be available.

Additionally, you would be required to attend a monthly meeting on the 4th Wednesday of the Month from 6:30-8:30pm (in SF or by phone).

The total obligation of hours would not exceed 20 hours per week.

PAN Internship duties are flexible, and responsibilities can be adjusted according to your educational level and work experience. If you are a law student or paralegal, we will modify the job responsibilities to match your skill level. College students and graduate students are welcome to apply.

The internship will involve administrative work. The position provides an opportunity for advocacy work, but advocacy is not a necessary part of the internship.


Required Tasks

  • Sort and scan mail, notify advocate of client mail
  • Check voicemails, make notes in client files
  • Check and respond to emails
  • Send mail to incarcerated clients
  • Maintain paper legal case files
  • Maintain electronic files
  • Assign tasks and manage project and tasks completion using Google Drive, Trello, and AirTable

  • Legal research and writing
  • Developing trainings and resources
  • Subject Specific Training 
  • Retreat planning
  • Logistical planning (booking event space, getting food, getting facilitator, printing materials, developing ice breakers)
  • Strategic planning, surveying members about achievements, things that work well, things that need improving, etc.
  • Summarizing work performed and achievements
  • Summarizing areas for improvement
  • Retreat follow up 
  • Outreach and tabling
  • Manage volunteers
  • Recruit volunteers
  • Fundraise and work on grant applications
  • Web design

Information on Advocacy:

Advocates are matched with a correspondent in the prison, with whom and/or for whom they advocate. This is a (at least) 10 hour per month commitment, as you will be responsible for moving a case forward. If you choose to do advocacy work as part of your internship, the hours you spend on advocacy will be included in your weekly internship hours.

Required

Strong technology skills. Experience with remote email and electronic communication. Strong organizational skills, and attention to detail. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of issues related to a progressive political agenda, including: support for civil liberties, workers' rights, social justice; opposition to government repression, racism, homophobia and sexism. Self-motivated, able to implement and complete projects in a timely manner. Able to manage multiple priorities; flexible, comfortable in open office environment with many projects and activities. Able to adapt to a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.


Desired

Experience working with incarcerated people. Experience working with individuals in the legal profession and in legal offices. Experience working in a grassroots, membership organization. Spanish-language skills a plus.

Layout and design skills. Experience with constituent relationship management tools, including databases.
