SKIP is a charity working with disadvantaged families in an impoverished district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Our holistic programme focuses on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family. Our aim is to foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives.
Within SKIP, we have two main programmes; education of the child and welfare of the child's family. Within the education programme, we have primary, secondary and English departments. Within family welfare, we have psychology, economic development and social work departments.
The Education Department
There are over 300 children between the ages of four and eighteen years old currently enrolled in the education program, which makes it the largest department in SKIP. We aim to maintain an exciting, stimulating and engaging learning environment. Our aim is not to replace the local education system, but rather supplement it. Following a curriculum designed especially for the children at SKIP, we provide classes in subjects such as reading comprehension, Math and Computing. Click here for more information on our education department.
The Secondary Department
The aim of this programme is to create a suitable atmosphere for SKIP teenagers, ranging in age from 12-18 years old, to navigate the difficult transition from child to adult and make positive choices for their future lives. Group sessions focus on values of solidarity and cooperation, respecting both themselves and others and also developing self-esteem and confidence. Participation in one academic class at SKIP is a requirement for young people in Secondary School. Choices can be made from Maths, English, Communications, Arts and Sports. In addition, there are a range of other workshops that young people are able to attend.
We need innovative thinkers who will be able to use our limited resources to have maximum impact for the 120 young people enrolled on the programme. Due to the large numbers enrolled, a key focus of the work needs to be group activities, so as to reach as many of the young people as possible.
At the moment the youth work programme allows youth that are enrolled in secondary schools to select their preferred area of study and broaden their knowledge in that area by participating in three different types of extracurricular activities at SKIP, which are: academic, recreational and workshops/scholarships. The academic option consists of activities with the objective of improving young people's knowledge and their performance at school, as well as their confidence and ability to work in a team. Subjects include English, Maths, Communications and Computing.
The second recreational option at SKIP allows the students to develop an array of skills such as: art, sports and critical thinking. By offering these activities SKIP also provides young people with a healthy recreational environment where they can spend their free time, a privilege that is often unavailable in El Porvenir for many youth. These activities include Arts, Cinema and Sports.
In terms of workshops and scholarships as the third option, SKIP has agreements with various educational institutions within the city to provide this opportunity to youth. Young people with a greater interest and consistent participation in the programme are granted scholarships for English and French language courses as well as vocational and professional training, all of which are supervised and monitored throughout the programme.
