Overview: Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 133 independent, non-profit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance. 

 

The Office of Program Performance (OPP) is responsible for oversight of grantees’ delivery of high-quality legal services to low-income clients. OPP also is responsible for administering several special competitive grant projects. This internship will support the Technology Initiative Grants (TIG) and the Pro Bono Innovation Fund grants (PBIF) process.

 

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to:

 

  1. Become familiar with the technology initiatives unique to legal services organizations;
  2. Become familiar with the pro bono projects, innovations and initiatives that support legal services delivery;
  3. Become skilled in Excel and Google Fusion Maps/Tables, which support the office’s work; and
  4. Learn time management skills while working on multiple time-sensitive projects.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate, graduate, and law students. The ideal applicant will be dependable, self-motivated, professional, hard-working, disciplined, and demonstrate integrity. He or she will have excellent research and analytical skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, be attentive to details, and able to work both independently and on a team. He or she also will exercise good judgment and be an effective problem-solver, intellectually curious, and committed to LSC’s mission to promote equal access to justice. A high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required. 

 

The intern’s hours will be up to 37.5 hours per week. The internship will run from June 2018 through the August 2018.

 

The intern’s principal duties and responsibilities include:

 

  1. Provide general administrative support to OPP’s grant programs, particularly the Technology Innovation Grants and Pro Bono Innovation Fund grants. This includes processing payment requests, reviewing reports of completed work, and, reviewing funding applications and related documents; 
  2. Maintain and update databases and documents using various applications, including Easy Grants (grants management system);
  3. Provide internet-based and other research on various topics;
  4. Draft and edit reports and various documents;
  5. Maintain files and information in accordance with office protocols; and
  6. Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

HOURLY RATE:

This position is paid hourly. Hourly rate is based on class year: $12.20-$15.20 for undergraduates and $16.20-$18.20 for graduate/law students.
