Heartland Alliance International (HAI) supports meaningful change in the lives of vulnerable individuals in the aftermath of violence and human rights abuses. Across the world, when rights are threatened, HAI works to restore them. We provide specialized mental health care and access to legal services to improve the well-being and restore justice for marginalized people and communities.

HAI is the global arm of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, a family of organizations in Chicago for more than 125 years. HAI implements programs on a range of global human rights issues in Latin America and the Caribbean; the Middle East; and Sub-Saharan Africa.

We currently have two internships available - Program Development and Communications focused. Both internships are an opportunity to support HAI's work in some of the following ways:

  • Completing literature reviews and best-practice research on international HIV/AIDS, mental health; access to justice, capacity development, and other topics to ensure evidence-based programming;
  • Supporting proposal development - including technical research, content analysis and interpretation, technical writing, editing, budgeting, and proposal submission;
  • Collecting, consolidating, and analyzing data from HAI Country Programs for internal and external sharing purposes;
  • Researching and analyzing funding opportunities to identify and prioritize program development in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East;
  • Coordinating with international offices and the Chicago team to collect stories, photos, and videos from our work in the field;
  • Conducting research and developing blog posts, eNewsletter content, fact sheets, and other print and digital materials;
  • Monitoring for media coverage related to HAI program areas;
