Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 500 children in grades K – 12 living in one of the most under-resourced communities in southeast Washington, DC, called Wellington Park. In this neighborhood, 80 percent of adults do not have a high school diploma, and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. With support from committed volunteers, Horton’s Kids’ goal is to change the life trajectory of children by providing academic, youth development, and health and basic needs supports. We are seeking a highly-motivated person to serve in our Capitol Hill office as a Programs Intern for the Summer or Fall 2018 semester.

Our Programs Internship at Horton’s Kids will support the Deputy Director who oversees all program functions. It would be a great fit for someone looking to learn more about nonprofit programs, program evaluation, outcomes tracking and program alignment. Program areas the intern will work on include our Education programs (tutoring, homework help, educational advocacy), Youth Development programs (case management, special events, enrichment and social-emotional development) , Health & Basic Needs (food, mental health, physical health, community outreach). 

The Deputy serves a critical role at the intersection of all programs and the intern will play an important role in assisting the Deputy with program alignment, program evaluation and outcomes tracking. 

Skills/Experience Needed:

  • Program Evaluation experience a plus
  • Youth Development or Education experience a plus
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Out-going, personable, and enthusiastic.
  • Flexible to schedule changes and last minute assignments.
  • Highly organized and dependable.
  • Willing to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Reliable transportation is a plus to go to and from the Community Resource Center (separate location than the main office).
  • Experience in an inner-city setting is a plus and a passion for serving children and youth from under-resourced communities.

This is an unpaid internship, but all interns whose internships are not funded by school or other grants receive a monthly $100 transportation stipend to defray commuting costs.

Horton’s Kids staff works in a metro-accessible office located on Capitol Hill as well as Community Resource Center in Anacostia. Interns may be asked to work some evening hours, do some lifting, or assist at Horton’s Kids academic programs.
