    Description

    Position: Medical Director

    Minimum Commitment: 12 Months

    Reports to: Executive Director

    Start Date: Flexible

    Probation: 60 Days

    Status: Full Time

    Benefits: Housing and Meals Provided, weekly Living Stipend

    We are looking for experienced and motivated people to coordinate and lead the medical staff and volunteers and to work with our Executive Director to supervise program activities for Floating Doctors, Panama. Floating Doctors serves over 24 indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé communities in the western Caribbean region of Panama. A 10,000 square mile area of mountains, jungles and mangrove mazes and no roads.

    This Fellowship therefore differs from most international service opportunities because its goal is not just improving health outcomes and capacity, but also to facilitate you becoming a stronger health professional, equipped and motivated to be a powerful advocate for excellence, compassion, and a better future for patients and clinicians worldwide.

    The roles you will fulfill while here are many and include:

    • Regular guidance, oversight, and support to the Lead Medical Providers
    • Medical supervision of single-day and multi-day deployments
    • Working in collaboration with clinic, pharmacy, and financial managers to determine community priorities, clinic schedule, medication needs, and funding priorities
    • Coordination with local health services and maintaining relationships with our local health care contacts
    • Coordination with other foreign medical groups such as Operation Smile
    • Ensuring that our medical guidelines are up to date and consistent with the latest literature
    • Leading emergency responses, including debriefing meetings in the event of any serious medical incident
    • Identifying and reporting epidemiological trends and health needs to the appropriate authorities
    • Identifying/coordinating with executive officers, staff and other relevant entities to plan and implement new medical capacity growth
    • Assigning mentees from our short-term volunteers to our long-term Lead Medical Providers

    Qualifications:

    • Fully registered doctor, NP, PA, or APN with a minimum of 2 years clinical experience
    • Prior experience working / volunteering in a developing country (not required but is preferred)
    • Evidence of the ability to lead a team and experience in teaching and managing personalities.
    • Availability for a minimum of 12 months.
    • Working knowledge of Spanish
    • Training or special interest in Tropical medicine an advantage
