Flexible, for a minimum of 360 total hours

Paz Oaxaca is a nonprofit located in Oaxaca, Mexico, dedicated to promoting peace, equity, and sustainability in our community. We create and support community programs that are equitable and accessible to all, regardless of income or background. We currently support a Dual Language Immersion Montessori program, after-school programs, tutoring, community clothing exchanges, libraries, a garden, and MakerSpace, and are in the process of developing many more programs. We are supported by our 501(c)(3). Check out our website at www.pazoaxaca.org.

Interns may work in more than one area or program and have the opportunity to learn teaching, gardening, construction, fundraising, project development and coordination, and many more skills. Some work can be remotely.

Volunteers can work in our office or remotely from anywhere in the world.

"I have had a few months to reflect on my time in Oaxaca, and I would like to say thank you for the amazing experience I had working with Paz. I feel that it helped me understand how I want to approach working with children, and in some ways changed the course of what I want to do in my life. I learned many things from the teachers at Paz, how to lead a group gently but firmly, how to mediate conflict gracefully and compassionately. I have been putting a lot of thought into pursuing Montessori training, and been thinking about spending more time at Paz."

—Nadia, Paz intern

HOURS

  • Interns: Paz Interns commit to a minimum of 360 hours, which could be worked in a variety of schedules (eg. 30 hours per week for 3 months, 15 hours per week for 6 months, or 7.5 hours per week for a year).
  • Volunteers: For those who wish to make a smaller commitment, there are also volunteer positions available.

We work with our interns to develop an individualized program that is beneficial to both the intern and Paz. Here are some of the ways that Paz Oaxaca Interns get involved:

OPEN POSITIONS (Positions may be combined)

Paz & Play (Intern)

Paz & Play is an after-school program that serves children from the community of Guadalupe Victoria who attend local public schools. The program focuses on peace (prosocial skills, Montessori Peace Curriculum, and Nonviolent Communication), environmental education, and English. Paz & Play interns are responsible for lesson planning, program instruction, and creating and maintaining relationships with the family and community.

The group is mixed in terms of age (ranging from 6-12 years) and level of English.

The Paz & Play interns work with a Montessori guide to direct the students’ activities in a way that fosters independent growth: academically, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Students are challenged to reach their fullest potential, in accordance with Montessori philosophy and practice. Paz & Play interns lead English activities with all students and help the Montessori guide(s) by directing students' tasks and maintaining the environment.

Paz provides second-language instruction training, Nonviolent Communication and/or restorative justice training, CPR training, and continued teaching and instructional support and resources throughout the internship.

Experience working with children of primary age is required, and a semester-long commitment is strongly preferred (either January through late July or mid-August through late December). Strong candidates will be proficient in Spanish, interested in taking on leadership roles, and able to maintain regular communication with families.

Community Programs (Intern or Volunteer)

Community Programs interns and volunteers work in a variety of Paz Oaxaca's programs to support coordination and development of new and existing projects. Paz currently supports a Dual Language Immersion Montessori program, after-school programs for public school students, an early family support program, a tutoring program, community libraries, a garden, and a MakerSpace. The Community Programs Intern or Volunteer will work in collaboration with the program executive directors and Paz team members and will be responsible for supporting existing community relationships and cultivating new relationships.

Development and Communications (Intern or Volunteer)

Paz Oaxaca Interns will help with organizational communications, social media, fundraising, and development. Interns will learn grant writing and development skills, community building and coordination skills, social media content creation and management, and more.

Paz Oaxaca Translator and Proofreader (Intern or Volunteer)

We are currently looking for an intern or volunteer fluent in Spanish and English to help us translate, copyedit, and transcribe documents and short videos. Translators and proofreaders can work remotely from anywhere in the world and should have experience translating and copyediting from Spanish to English. Participants will hone their translation skills while helping a growing nonprofit with essential tasks and projects.

Paz Reading Specialist (Intern or Volunteer)

Volunteers and Interns in this position support Paz's DLIM guides in teaching and supporting beginning readers. Interns/volunteers will work closely with individual students in order to foster and grow each child’s reading skills and guide students in becoming confident readers. Candidates should have experience teaching and supporting early readers.

Dual Language Immersion Specialist (Intern or Volunteer)

The Paz Dual Language Immersion Specialist will work closely with Paz’s guides in order to grow and support our Dual Language Immersion program. They will provide guidance and support to educators and students. Candidates should have experience in Dual Language Immersion environments and should be confident mentoring instructors in Dual Language Immersion techniques and strategies.

FINANCING YOUR INTERNSHIP

We work interns to connect them with opportunities that allow them to make their time at Paz Oaxaca financially sustainable. This is frequently through a remote part-time job earning US dollars (approximately one hour teaching English, editing, or being a virtual assistant online is about the equivalent of a typical Oaxacan daily wage).
