The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that promotes lasting peace with justice, as a practical expression of faith in action. Program Summary 

The AFSC Healing Justice Program works in coalition to end mass incarceration and other punitive approaches in California and replace them with restorative and healing practices. The program plays roles in ending solitary confinement in California, stopping the Urban Shield SWAT competition, and passing the state’s Racial Justice Act. In the coming year we will research and critique governance decisions and advance community-centered policies related to prison closure, police demilitarization, and community safety.  

Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the Robert N. and Ella S. Ristad Intern include the following: 

  1. Research specific issues as assigned by Healing Justice staff. Compile information in written form for use by staff, partner organizations and for legislative information purposes. 
  2. Participate in the Californian Responsible for Responsible Budget (CURB) Coalition campaign to close California prisons via monthly calls, work groups and activities. 
  3. Write or assist in writing and editing public materials for campaigns and coalitions in which the Healing Justice program participates. 
  4. Support organizing and mobilizing of directly impacted communities and allies for engagement at meetings, demonstrations, and hearings regarding prison closure in the Central Valley.  
  5. Applicants based in Kings County, Fresno County or San Joaquin County are preferred. 

Minimum Qualifications 

Experience: 2-4 years in social justice activism. 

Other Required Skills and Abilities: 

  1. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual. 
  2. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC regarding issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff. 
  3. Strong community roots based in a region of the Central Valley. 
  4. Ability to organize material for written presentation. 
  5. Knowledge of a range of criminal justice issues, including mass incarceration and policing
