Organization Description

Growing Home is a USDA-Certified Organic urban farm in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago that uses urban farming as a vehicle for paid job training for individuals with barriers to employment. Individual barriers for program Production Assistants (“PAs”) may include prior contact with the criminal justice system, barriers related to living near or below the poverty line, or lack of traditional market economy work experience. The job training program consists of paid, on-the-job training in urban farming, job readiness skills training in our classroom, and highly individualized case management support to assist PAs in lowering barriers to employment. The Employment Training Season runs from April to November each year. There are 3 cohorts that last 14 weeks with approximately 20 people in each cohort.

Internship Dates: Start and end date flexible with institution's academic calendar Hours: 24 hours/week

While you are at Growing Home, you will:

  • Learn strategies to support people who experience barriers to employment.
  • Work with Production Assistant’s to improve job readiness including but not limited to: resume writing, interviewing, job search, and professionalism.
  • Work with Production Assistant’s to resolve challenges that could serve as barriers to maintaining employment.

Social Work Intern Job Description

  • Participate in 1-on-1 case management meetings with Production Assistants to support achievement of participant-driven goals.
  • Complete community resource research to connect Production Assistant’s to high-quality supportive services.
  • Assist Employment Training Department team members with job readiness skill-building of Production Assistant in the classroom.
  • Support Case Management Coordinator with entry of client data into case management electronic systems.
  • Create a culminating project of a proposal to improve outcomes of Production Assistant’s in Growing Home’s program.
  • Participate in weekly supervision and Employment Training Department team meetings.

Required Experience

  • Masters in Social Work (MSW) candidate at a university accredited by CSWE.
  • Comfortable working directly with marginalized populations; ability to engage with individuals in an authentic and nonjudgmental manner.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills; ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in decision-making.
  • Professional computer skills required, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite required.
