Position Description

Task Force legal externships for academic credit are available part- or full-time each semester, presently virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Legal externs work on the Task Force Policy Team, which has attorneys who focus on federal, and sometimes state and local, policy. We center racial, economic, gender and social justice in all our work, reflected in our policy agenda and legal policy advocacy. Presently we are seeking two legal externs for each semester in the 2021-22 academic year: one to focus on equity and one for democracy work. Through broad coalition work, legal externs will meet a diverse network of LGBTQ and allied attorneys working on a variety of progressive issues. Typical duties include:

Legal Extern for Equity – focus on religious exemptions and reproductive justice

  • Performing legal research and writing on LGBTQ equity issues, which could be memos, testimony, advocacy letters, or other documents.
  • Performing research and writing for our REAL (Religious Exemptions and Liberties) Coalition.
  • Performing research and writing for our reproductive justice or sex ed leadership development work.
  • Drafting one or more formal comments in response to proposed federal regulations.
  • Taking on other substantive projects as our Queering Equity work moves forward.

Legal Extern for Democracy – focus on federal regulatory work

  • Analyzing regulations from federal agencies with recommendations for policy change.
  • Drafting one or more formal comments in response to proposed federal regulations.
  • Participating in daily monitoring of the Federal Register for the FedWatch multi-issue coalition of 400+ groups.
  • Writing weekly digests of federal comment opportunities to be distributed by listserv.
  • Taking on other substantive projects as our Queering Democracy work moves forward.

Our legal externship program is substantive, with hands-on work that helps law students build their experience, portfolio, and resumes. We give legal externs a range of assignments that reflect today’s policy advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ community. The Task Force believes that the best way to build a movement of effective policy advocates is to provide emerging leaders with practical experience in the day-to-day life of national level LGBTQ policy lawyers, with guidance and supervision from our experienced Senior Policy Counsels for Democracy and Equity.
