About Street Law

Street Law, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that creates classroom and community programs that teach people about law, democracy, and human rights worldwide. Founded in 1972 at Georgetown University Law Center, Street Law has helped more than 100 law schools develop and implement programs in which law students teach practical law in schools, communities and correctional settings. Street Law writes high school level law and civics curriculum and trains secondary social studies teachers. Street Law also works with a variety of legal and educational professionals on projects that empower individuals and local communities. Information about the organization’s programs and materials are available online at www.streetlaw.org

Internship Description

Street Law seeks two Law Student interns for the summer of 2020. Responsibilities will be divided evenly between the two positions and will focus on 1) reviewing, researching, modifying, and creating curricular material for legal community partnership and civic education programs, and 2) attending and supporting Street Law’s Supreme Court Summer Institute. The law students will also have the opportunity to work on other Street Law programs or projects occasionally.

Legal Community Partnership and Civic Education Programs

The law students will work on a variety of Street Law programs including its legal diversity pipeline and its teacher professional development programs. The law students may help design lessons and activities on civil law topics in plain, accessible language for a program with high school students. The law students also may prepare teaching materials and research for a project designed to increase deliberative, civil conversations across political and demographic differences. The law students may also help to research and write materials about historic Supreme Court cases (for www.LandmarkCases.org), or review portions of text for upcoming publications.

Supreme Court Summer Institute

This teacher professional development institute brings a select group of high school social studies teachers to Washington, DC, for an immersive six days of educational activities related to teaching about the U.S. Supreme Court. Teachers participate in sessions led by Supreme Court experts, journalists, and lawyers, as well as two Street Law staff members. The Institute covers six current (or recent cases) and prepares teachers to use innovative methods to teach about both current and historical cases. This exciting opportunity culminates with a visit to the Court to hear decisions handed down and a reception at the Court.

Requirements

Law students must be able to provide their own funding. Street Law is also happy to provide support and documentation for students earning credit for this internship. A modest transportation stipend will be provided to cover commuting costs.  The interns must be available to start on Monday, May 18, 2020 and to commit 35 hours per week. The internship ends on Friday, July 10, 2020. Street Law’s office is located in downtown Silver Spring, a short walk from the Metro stop. The Supreme Court Summer Institute will take place in downtown Washington, DC.

The law students who join us will have strong research skills, a commitment to public interest work, and the ability to write about legal topics for a lay audience (not the same skill as the legal writing taught in law schools). These are ideal positions for rising second year law students with a strong background in constitutional law and/or environmental law.

Additional Required Qualifications:

  • Availability to attend at least one of the Supreme Court Summer Institutes in Washington, DC, on the following dates: June 18–23 and June 25–30.
  • Attention to detail in proofreading and editing documents
  • Strong work ethic, punctuality, persistence, and flexibility
  • An ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft products, especially Word and Excel
  • A positive can-do attitude and a willingness to think creatively
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve quickly and also work independently on long-term tasks
  • An interest in constitutional law, research, social justice, and/or non-profit work
