The Waterfront Alliance is a coalition of more than 1,100 organizations with ties to our regional waterways. Our mission is to inspire and effect resilient, revitalized, and accessible coastlines for all communities. Together we are working to transform the waters of the New York and New Jersey harbor and waterfront into clean and accessible places to live, work, and play, with inviting parks, dependable jobs, and reliable transportation for all. We seek a part-time WEDG Fellow to help us review technical project materials for our WEDG program.

The WEDG® (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines) program was launched in 2015 to answer the question: how can we create the best possible waterfront? The result of a collaboration between government agencies, nonprofit organizations, technical experts, and other waterfront stakeholders, WEDG seeks to address this question through a program that serves as a communication tool, guidelines, and incentive system for landowners, community members, developers, designers, and engineers. In the same way that LEED has done for buildings, WEDG aims to shift the market toward more resilient, accessible, and ecologically-responsible waterfront design.

In 2018, the Waterfront Alliance released a new, nationally-applicable standard which won the American Planning Association’s Gold National Achievement Award for Best Practice. In just over a year, WEDG has grown into a fee-for-service model with three core offerings: review for WEDG Verification of waterfront projects, WEDG Professionals for technical trainings and WEDG Associate credentialing, and WEDG Neighborhoods for community collaborations and visionings. Additionally, WEDG formed its first national partnership in Camden New Jersey, and generated critical grassroots demand in New York City by gaining resolutions from 22 of 43 waterfront community boards to support the use of WEDG for new waterfront development.

The position:

The WEDG Fellow is an exciting opportunity to assist the Waterfront Alliance in reviewing critical waterfront resiliency projects for potential WEDG Verification. The fellow will learn the ins and outs of the WEDG standard in order to help Waterfront Alliance staff and external volunteers/consultants review technical project materials, including construction documents, environmental impact assessments, engineering reports, operations schedules, and other documentation. In addition to being passionate about resilient, accessible, and sustainable waterfront development, this position is well suited for graduate students with some working experience in architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, urban design, or sustainability, and are looking to apply and hone their technical skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Play a key role in assessing construction documents, site plans, engineering/environmental assessments, community engagement materials, and other technical documentation for waterfront projects seeking WEDG Verification status.
  •  Work with multi-disciplinary, accredited professional volunteers to facilitate external reviews and technical consultation.
  • Provide input on technical aspects of the projects’ planning and design, from analyzing the impact of hydrodynamic conditions on the project, to verifying stormwater calculations, to assessing the robustness and equitability of the community engagement process using the WEDG standard.
  • Help to beta test the new WEDG application portal where documentation is submitted.
  • Collaborate with Waterfront Alliance communications team on marketing and communications aspects of the project review process.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (preferred) in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, or urban design is required.
  • Familiarity with issues related to urban planning and design in coastal areas.
  • Energetic and collaborative spirit, with the ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Advanced/excellent proficiency with design software (e.g. Adobe Create Suite) preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A high level of organization and attention to detail.
