Emergency Management Intern

The Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County (CCALAC) is a non-profit membership organization that provides a wide variety of essential services to LA’s community clinics and health centers (clinics). Founded in 1994, CCALAC’s mission is to, “promote community clinics and health centers as providers and advocates for expanding access to quality comprehensive health care for medically underserved people in Los Angeles County.”                                                   

CCALAC’s 65 member organizations serve over 1.4 million patients each year, regardless of ability to pay. These organizations include private, non-profit, 330-designated federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), FQHC Look-Alikes, free and community clinics.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position reports to the Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) and provides administrative, technical assistance and programmatic support for the Emergency Management program. The Emergency Management Intern will assist the EMC on special project coordination, Emergency plans and training, and maintenance of communication tools. The Emergency Management Intern will receive hands-on experience, as they will be fully integrated into CCALAC and assigned to projects related to CCALAC’s Emergency Management Program.

LENGTH OF TIME 

The duration of this position is 12 weeks. Commitment is 12-15 hours per week. 

 POSITION DUTIES 

Work with Emergency Management Coordinator to assist in providing technical support and assistance to health centers in the planning process for emergency operations, business continuity, hazard-specific response plans, and regulatory and auditing requirements pertinent to emergency management.

Work with Emergency Management Coordinator to visit with health center staff and conduct interviews to strengthen health center activities that successfully build organizational and community resiliency. 

Work with Emergency Management Coordinator to facilitate training and make updates to mass communication systems (Everbridge).

Research primary care health center current emergency preparedness needs during disaster and non-disaster.

Assist in compiling emergency management-related materials and distributing to health center staff as requested. 

In conjunction with Emergency Management Coordinator, attend various local disaster planning meetings.  

Participate in CCALAC events as requested. 

Draft template plans, policies, and procedures for primary care health centers under direct or indirect supervision.

Other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

Enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate or graduate degree, preferably in emergency management, public health, homeland security, public administration, or a related field.  

Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred. 

Strong interest in emergency management or public service.   

Strong organizational and presentation skills. 

Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively as part of a team as well as with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. 

Must exhibit a passion for emergency preparedness and disaster planning. 

Must exhibit a passion for advocating for medically underserved populations. 

Must be self-motivated and comfortable working on issues that are not well defined. 

Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision; detail-oriented; ability to strategize and solve complex problems. 

Ability to effectively prioritize work and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 

Strong skills with Excel, & MS Office Suite required.
