Position Summary

The Winter Research & Analysis Intern will have the opportunity to become involved with diverse activities associated with the research and production of annual reports produced in the New York office. Assigned duties will depend on the particular prior experiences and skills of the intern and the current production stage of the annual publications. All interns are encouraged to complete a personal project during their internship, such as contributing to Freedom House’s Freedom at Issue blog. Candidates with thematic or regional interests, as well as qualitative or quantitative research experience, are encouraged to apply. This position is based in New York and reports to the Managing Editor. Interns will work 16 hours a week and receive a small monthly stipend.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and able to receive academic credit or fulfill an academic requirement 
  • Background or interest in international affairs and human rights
  • Self-advocate with strong ability to ask questions, learn, and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated experience conducting desk-based research
  • Highly motivated with ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects when working under a deadline
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; graduate school experience may be necessary for the level of research needed
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research is a plus
  • Experience using the Chicago Manual of Style is a plus
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing

 

Some Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct internet research on topics relevant to Freedom House publications
  • Assist with the development of presentation materials
  • Fact-check, proofread, and edit documents, including materials for the annual publications, for relevance and accuracy
  • Provide background research for blog posts
  • Prepare written summaries of materials gathered through research
  • Participate in meetings with guests hosted by Freedom House, such as activists, government officials, and members of civil society
  • Assist with data entry and analysis
  • Other administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned
