About the role

Do you have a flair for storytelling, love science and are excited about using online tools to make a difference in the world? We are looking for a talented young communicator to bring the results of our research to the wider scientific community, the general public, donors and policy makers.

As a Science Communications and Digital Marketing Intern, you will help translate scientific research in cool content for several global communication campaigns around key international days, as well as opinion pieces, interviews and other multimedia materials for the website and social media channels of WorldFish and the global CGIAR Research Program on Fish Agri-Food Systems (FISH).

This internship is an excellent opportunity to develop science communication skills in the digital space while working with a competence and skilled team, providing valuable work experience with a leading international research organization that will support your resume in any future work.

Applicants for this opening may come from a broad range of disciplines, although ideal candidates will have a demonstrated talent for science and online communications, and academic interest in key research topics relevant to WorldFish (sustainable aquaculture and fisheries, ocean governance, nutrition, gender equality, resilience and adaptation to climate change, youth issues and gender equality, etc.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person to develop their experience in a busy and dynamic communications and marketing department in a well-respected international research organization.

You will be organized, enthusiastic and have an established social media presence as well as a demonstrable interest in digital communications. You must be unfazed by technical research, new technologies and be able to learn about and apply new digital tools quickly.

The intern will be expected to:

  • Assist in planning, conceptualizing, drafting and developing materials for digital campaigns around important international days and global events, such as World Environment Days, International Day of Women, World Food Day, etc.
  • Review information from various research outputs (reports, publications, briefs, datasets, photos, tools, etc.) in order to draft and produce blog pieces, news articles, photo stories, video abstracts, social media posts, etc.
  • Assist in the preparation of multimedia content for external and internal newsletters, collecting and drafting research stories and input from scientists and other communication focal points.
  • Provide support with planning and organization of strategic events designed to pitch and promote scientific findings to global and regional policy makers and potential investors to research innovations that support the sustainable development of a blue economy and an inclusive ocean governance.
  • Develop dashboard and infographics for monitoring and reporting on global media coverage of key science publications and campaigns led by WorldFish and its research partners.
  • Assist with other tasks as needed and assigned by the Digital Communications and Marketing Specialist.

Requirements

Essential Skills and Qualifications

This internship role might be for you if you have:

  • The ideal candidate is someone who is interested in strategic communications and digital communications and marketing tools, with strong writing skills.
  • Currently affiliated with an institution of higher education or research in pursuit of a Bachelor or Master’s degree in English, Marketing/Communications, Science Communications, Environmental Science, Aquaculture and Fisheries Sciences, International Development, or related field.
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific topics to a general audience and to synthesize a wide variety of concepts in a written format.
  • Strong writing/editing skills and experience in scientific research and publications.
  • Good understanding and skills in digital and social media tools and platforms, such: Drupal, WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Flickr and preferably design skills (Adobe InDesign, Spark and Photoshop.
  • High proficiency in English and an effective communicator, both written and oral.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission and work of WorldFish.
  • Must be computer literate (working knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Proactive team player and an individual who can work hard and well with minimal supervision.
  • Previous internship or related experience in marketing or communications is a plus.

Location and Duration
