Community Justice Research and Communications Intern

The Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF), a project of Tides Advocacy, is a nonprofit organization building power for and with communities of color to end gun violence. We were formed by activists and survivors of gun violence to help support and empower communities directly impacted by violence. CJAF focuses full-time on building power and infrastructure to end gun violence in communities of color. We do this by creating organizing and communications strategies that engage and empower communities that are most impacted by gun violence. 

Position Summaries:

Research Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct policy research to identify new or existing policy areas that can reduce gun violence in Black and brown communities 
  • Assist in building an internal reference sheet of approved research and statistics to bolster our advocacy efforts 
  • Write at least one external fact sheet on gun violence prevention that distills complex ideas into digestible and compelling writing 
  • Identify organizations doing parallel advocacy work to reduce gun violence that we may partner with

Needed skills: 

  • Excellent internet research skills including identifying reputable sources and tracing findings back to primary sources 
  • Clear and direct writing skills
  • Attention to detail 
  • Familiarity with Excel or Google Sheets
  • Basic math skills to calculate simple statistics (fractions, percent change, rates)

Communications & Digital Responsibilities:

  • Keep track of press clips in local newspapers and maintain a spreadsheet of articles and reporters contacts 
  • Assist with producing an internal messaging document to unify our language on key issues 
  • Track and source news for ongoing social media content 
  • Support research and creating social media and web communications projects on a variety of topics, as well as other duties as assigned 

Needed skills: 

  • Excellent attention to detail, ability to multi-task and take initiative 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency using a variety of social media tools
  • Strong graphic design skills are preferred.
