Communications Internships

Communications internships with the American Horticultural Society are open to any undergraduate or graduate student of journalism, English, horticulture, or related fields, and to post-graduates with relevant experience who are making a career change or seeking additional training.

While working closely with the staff of the AHS Communications Department, interns will gain experience in all facets of the editorial and production processes for The American Gardener, a bi-monthly national, four-color magazine published in both print and digital editions. Primary duties include researching and writing short articles, proofreading and fact-checking, compiling an event calendar, and coordinating author and photographer submissions. Interns may also participate in related communication projects such as book editing, website updates, social networking, and photography/videography.

As part of a broad-based exposure to gardening and horticultural communication, interns will also participate with other AHS interns in field trips to prominent local gardens and related sites, such as the U.S. National Arboretum, U.S. Botanic Garden, Dumbarton Oaks, Smithsonian Gardens, and Mount Vernon.

We offer two internship sessions annually, each for a six-month period: Winter/Spring (January through June) and Summer/Fall (July through December). Interns are paid $10 per hour and work a 37.5-hour week.

Application deadlines are as follows: Winter/Spring (November 1); Summer/Fall (February 4).
