Title: Legal Intern

Reports to: Intern Supervisor

Hours: Full-time for Summer 2021

Location: Remote

The legal experts at Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence fight for a safer America by researching, drafting, and defending the laws, policies, and programs proven to save lives from gun violence. We are seeking candidates for our 2021 summer legal internship program. Legal intern candidates must be current law students who will have completed at least one year of law school by the start of the 2021 summer internship. Strong applicants will have excellent research, analysis and writing skills, and a strong desire to learn tangible legal skills while contributing to our team’s mission.

The internship program is full-time and typically lasts approximately eight to ten weeks, with flexible start and end dates. Summer legal interns receive a stipend depending on the number of weeks worked. Due to the ongoing pandemic, this internship will be remote.

The Internship Program:

Our internship program gives law students the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge public policy issue that is at the forefront of U.S. politics and lawmaking. Legal interns will gain significant experience with statutory, legislative, and case law research and analysis, and can expect to work with attorneys on both legislative and litigation-related projects in the following areas:

  • Legislation: Work includes reading, analyzing and writing about proposed legislation; drafting letters of support or opposition to lawmakers; working with grassroots state and local groups to support legislative goals; and possibly attending hearings on pending legislation.
  • Litigation: Work includes analyzing court decisions, new lawsuits, and emerging trends in this field of constitutional law. Interns may also assist with outlining, drafting, or editing amicus briefs, as well as compiling and analyzing social science and public health research demonstrating the efficacy of challenged gun laws.
  • Community Violence Intervention Programs: Work includes analyzing proposals to invest in community-based violence intervention initiatives, and providing other research and writing assistance in support of Giffords Law Center’s efforts to educate lawmakers, community leaders, and other advocates about promising violence prevention programs.
  • Print Publications and Website: Work includes contributing to the development of Giffords Law Center’s print publications and internet-based materials, which provide in-depth factual summaries of federal, state, and local firearms laws and policies.
  • Other: The intern will also participate as an integrated member of the legal staff, (virtually) attend team meetings, and receive constructive feedback about work product from supervising attorneys. The legal intern will work on at least one in-depth gun policy research or analysis project, which the intern may then use as a writing sample.

About our Team:

Our team has a collegial atmosphere with a dedicated, collaborative staff. The legal team consists of eleven attorneys as well as legal research and public health research associates. During normal times, most of our attorneys work out of our San Francisco and Washington, DC offices, and some attorneys also work remotely from New York. Currently, all Giffords Law Center employees are working remotely.
