More about the Delaware Historical Society:

The Delaware Historical Society is a non-profit organization that preserves, promotes, and shares

Delaware's history in a welcoming environment to educate, inspire, and empower people and

communities. In 2016, the Jane and Littleton Mitchell Center for African American Heritage

opened with a core exhibit that explores Delaware’s African American history from 1639 to the

present. The Delaware Historical Society and Mitchell Center use a variety of methods to present

the African American historical record. Museum and web exhibitions, educational programs,

lectures, and special events complement historical society programs on African American history

and culture. The Delaware Historical Society archives and museum steward 3,000,000 materials,

including material culture, artifacts and 9 buildings that document five centuries of Delaware’s

heritage. This includes an archival collection of approximately 100 anti-slavery petitions,

manumission records, and slave sales documenting the history of slavery in Delaware. The

materials in this collection are robust and represent the period from 1759 to 1865.
