Working with SMYAL’s Development and Communications Departments, the Development and Communications Youth Fellow will gain experience in designing and executing projects that advance a non-profit’s strategic communications and fundraising efforts. This will be a twelve month paid part-time fellowship. During this time, Youth Fellows will be provided with access to leadership development opportunities while assisting the SMYAL team with crucial administrative tasks, as well as contributing to SMYAL’s decision making and overall growth. All Youth Fellows must be between 18 and 21 years old, and be able to commit to the entirety of the fellowship. Fellows must have an interest in supporting and empowering the LGBTQ community and communities of color. 

Position Responsibilities: 

The Development and Communications Fellow will be expected to work 20 hours a week, with some evenings and weekends required. The Fellowship will begin in early 2020, and end in December 2020 (dates to be determined based on SMYAL and fellow availability). As part of their fellowship responsibilities, the Development and Communications Fellow will be asked and trained to:

  • Develop monthly social media strategy plan with Communications Coordinator,
  • Draft and edit external facing communications to engage donors and supporters
  • Represent and be able to publicly speak about SMYAL’s work at events, workshops, conferences, and other arenas. Coordinate with programs staff members to speak about programmatic work when possible and providing talking points/coaching, as needed.
  • Assist in writing talking points and prepping youth speakers for events,
  • Assist in the planning and execution of SMYAL fundraising events throughout the year to include pre-event promotions, logistical preparations, and on site event execution.
  • Provide support for SMYAL’s signature event of the year, the SMYAL Fall Brunch, to include auction donor outreach and cultivation, ticket sales outreach, logistical preparations, onsite event execution, and other responsibilities with this major fundraising event with more than 800 guests.
  • Provide administrative support for donor engagement to include preparation of thank you notes, spreadsheet creation and editing, and donor outreach via phone and email.
  • Provide support to outside organizations who conduct fundraisers for SMYAL to include onsite event execution as well as providing marketing materials and support to organizations leading up to the event.
  • Develop and strengthen other skills previously specified as an area of interest, such as activism, social media management, development, etc.,
  • Other duties as assigned by Development and Communications departments
