Compensation is $20 - $25 per hour, estimated 15 hours per week, with a technology stipend provided. All work will be done remotely with regular check-ins with the Policy Director.
Internship opportunity will begin in early 2021, with an approximate end of April 30, 2021, depending on the preference/ availability of the intern.

The Policy Intern will assist in all legislative and budget policy activities in effort to advance the Association’s Policy Agenda. Such efforts will include state and federal policy engagement, including assistance around our First 5 state Advocacy Day on April 27th. The Intern will report to the Policy Director.  

DUTIES:

A.   Assist in Legislative & Budget Policy Activities

The Intern will help track, analyze, and produce rite-ups and on policy matters pertinent to young children and families. Specifically, the intern will analyze bills, update the Association’s legislative tracker, write advocacy and support letters to advance the Association’s policy goals around early learning, comprehensive health and development, and family strengthening.

B.   Research Critical Emerging Policy Areas

The intern will assist the policy team by researching policy concepts, proposals, and bills—both within California and across states—to help inform policy positions, messaging, and strategy.  

C.   Assist in Virtual Event Planning to Advance Early Childhood Policy

The Policy Intern will be asked to assist in virtual event planning for the 2021 First 5 Advocacy Day on April 27th.  This will likely entail tracking registration information, creating factsheet and advocacy materials, producing schedules for the virtual Zoom legislative visits, and more.

D.   Miscellaneous Policy Tasks as Needed

The Policy Intern may also be asked to perform other policy work as needed and assigning. Such tasks could include: drafting talking points, researching data and organizing data, and communicating policy opportunities to the extended First 5 network.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed college with four-year degree. A graduate of or currently enrolled in a Master’s level graduate school program in the social sciences, business, health care, public policy, public health or public administration field preferred (preferred).
  • Well organized and maintain close attention to detail when communicating with external stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, including ability to write reports and routine emails.  
  • Familiarity with researching and locating data (socioeconomic, education, general population, health, etc.) and doing data analysis.
  • Organize and prioritize work, multi-task, and work well under deadline pressure in a fast-paced, growing organization.
  • Exercise sound judgment within generally established policies and procedures
  • Take initiative and capability to work independently.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, work as part of a team.
