The Medicare Rights Center is a national, nonprofit consumer service organization that works to ensure access to affordable health care for older adults and people with disabilities through counseling and advocacy, educational programs, and public policy initiatives. Medicare Rights’ unique blend of direct service, advocacy, education, and policy work ensures that real beneficiary experiences reach the highest levels of policymaking, and that policies and laws adopted at state and federal levels are translated for beneficiaries and effectively implemented. For 30 years, Medicare Rights has provided assistance to millions of individuals and laid the groundwork for successful collaborations with advocates and policymakers in New York, Washington, DC, and across the country.

This unpaid summer legal internship provides in-depth training in Medicare law and policies, an opportunity to directly help older adults and people with disabilities facing significant health and financial issues, and a chance to interact with a multi-disciplinary staff of attorneys, social workers, and volunteers. Specifically, interns will:

  • Perform legal research and writing on Medicare (nationally) and Medicaid (in New York) issues to support our casework, educate staff, and inform our policy work.
  • Counsel callers on our helpline by providing accurate and meaningful information that will assist them in understanding Medicare and advocating for themselves.
  • Provide in-depth case assistance for clients with complex health coverage issues. The internship is designed to build on interns’ existing strengths as well as help them to develop communication, research, and counseling skills. Participants will receive intensive training and support around learning Medicare law and applying that knowledge to assist our clients in understanding and exercising their rights.
