About PCs for People

PCs for People believes that closing the digital divide presents one of the greatest opportunities to increase educational achievement, workforce readiness and employment, and ultimately move people out of poverty into economic prosperity. The organization was thus founded to help close the digital divide by providing low or no-cost refurbished computers, mobile Internet access, technology training, repair and tech support services to low-income individuals and families and nonprofit organizations that serve vulnerable and under-resourced individuals and communities.

Founded in St. Paul Minnesota in 2008, PCs for People just opened in Baltimore, one of the worst digitally connected cities in America. Over the next 3 years PCs for People plans to change that statistic, providing computers for 25% of the households who do not own one, connecting more than 10,000 households with mobile internet access and improving digital skills for thousands of community members.

PCS for People opened in Baltimore in July 2020 and is building out its operation with the goal of eventually serving the whole state of Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and Northern Virginia.

Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a local nonprofit start-up that is building its operations to best address the unique digital needs of our community. The VISTA Digital Inclusion Coordinator will play a critical role, helping to ensure high quality digital inclusion services are provided to the community. To contribute to these efforts, the Digital Inclusion Coordinator will manage several projects and activities including:

• Coordinate computer distribution and education events at schools, community centers, public housing, and other venues designed to present affordable computers and digital resources to low-income families
• Lead the efforts to develop the digital skills resources and trainings, creating new and leveraging existing resources and content, developing partnerships with other organizations to collaborate on training development and delivery.
• Identify and train community residents to serve as volunteer Digital Navigators – people that provide digital inclusion services such as helping other community residents with internet connectivity in their home, securing a computer, and digital literacy training.
• Recruit and coordinate volunteers who can assist with digital literacy training, computer refurbishing and staffing our technical support help desk.
• Adopt our startup mode "whatever it takes" attitude and commitment as we tackle together one of the most difficult issues hindering economic mobility in Baltimore, Maryland.
