POSITION DESCRIPTION

This is a unique opportunity for a highly organized, motivated college or graduate student looking to gain exposure to policy and community organizing work at a nonprofit organization. Reporting to the Advocacy & Policy Manager, the Policy Intern will assist on a variety of projects that support AAF’s policy priorities on the 2020 Census, immigration, mental health, seniors, and nonprofit support. These projects will be used to inform policy makers, community organizations, and other stakeholders on the state of the Asian American community. The Intern will gain hands-on experience in implementing advocacy strategies and exposure to the short-term and long-term impacts of policy decisions.

Hours are flexible but requires a minimum commitment of 14 hours per week. A travel stipend will be provided. The position will start in January 2020 for the Spring 2020 school term.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Track and analyze local, state, and federal budget and legislation that impact the Asian American community, especially in New York
  • Attend legislative hearings at city and state levels
  • Conduct outreach to member organizations and partner advocacy groups to collect survey data on community needs
  • Organize and plan logistics for upcoming AAF events, including advocacy work that entails rallies, press conferences, mobilizations, and roundtable discussions
  • Assist with scheduling for lobbying visits and site visits to member and partner organizations
  • Provide social media support for advocacy areas as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Background in public policy, public administration, community organizing, immigration, and/or working with marginalized groups
  • Experience working with community organizations, nonprofits, and/or elected offices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including facility with social media
  • Capacity for critical thinking/analysis, initiative, creativity, and flexibility
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Fluency in an Asian language preferred but not required
