We require a dynamic, creative and outgoing university student / young professional to join our exciting team as soon as possible for a minimum 6 month internship period.

Job Description:

There is a real shortage of skilled physical therapists in the north-western Himalayan region who could cater to increasing demands of occupational health and elderly. If you’re currently training with at least one year of experience, recently qualified, or on a career break, you’ll provide valuable treatment to babies, children, and adults with a wide range of physical problems.

The experiences you’ll have on physical therapy placement abroad will give you a greater understanding of how professionals in the fields work in a developing country while providing valuable experience overseas.

Interns with a year or more experience, but who are not yet fully qualified, work at the disabled rehabilitation and Restorative Care Centre in Kangra. Therapists who are fully qualified and can commit to at least eight weeks on the project work at one of the rehabilitation and restorative care centre at Kangra / Dharamshala.

Key Roles and Responsibility:

Helper.

A physiotherapy assistant helps patients perform basic physical examination and treatment preparation tasks that they might have difficulty completing. For example, a physiotherapy assistant might help lift or slide a patient into position on a table. She might also help a patient to undress or remove supportive devices, like braces or slings, to apply therapeutic treatment techniques, such as aquatic, sound, light, electrical stimulation, heat, cold or massage therapies.

Trainer.

Physical therapy assistants educate and train patients by explaining how to change behaviors and home or work routines that exacerbate a condition; or how to use exercise or assistive devices to reduce pain, strengthen the body and improve coordination. A physical therapy assistant helps design a customized patient treatment plan. She then demonstrates exercises from the plan and monitors the patient’s on-site workout.

Motivator.

Although pain or mobility issues can motivate a person to pursue physical therapy, they can also undermine his motivation once he starts and make it difficult for him to stick with it. A physiotherapist assistant acts as the patient’s personal cheerleader. She uses sensitivity and kindness to establish trust and then encourages a patient to continue treatment even when the plan might include initial discomfort and repetition. She continues to motivate by expressing enthusiasm and pride whenever the patient improves and offering support when the patient suffers setbacks.

Other Roles.

The physiotherapy assistant acts as a patient’s treatment record keeper. She notes patient vitals, treatment plan progress and setbacks and then provides updates to the physiotherapist for review. Unless the office has one or more physical therapy aides, she also prepares and cleans the therapy rooms, workout area and equipment between patient visits and at the end of the day. Additionally, she might serve as a general office clerk and answer phones, order supplies, or take insurance or patient self-pay payments.

Skills and Knowledge:

Physiotherapy assistants should have a passion for helping others and the medical sciences. Most physiotherapy assistants are required to have a license and at least an associate’s degree, but other requirements vary by state. Employers tend to seek out physiotherapy assistants with the following skills and qualifications:

Clinical experience – physiotherapy assistants have knowledge of basic physiotherapy practices, such as how to treat injured patients in a clinical setting using stretching exercises, hydrotherapy, medical devices, and other practices, and how to apply them in real life

First-aid – most physiotherapy assistants know basic life support, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and other first aid techniques; since they work closely with injured individuals, they should be prepared to respond if an emergency occurs. These trainings are available at our facility / site too hospital too.

Computer skills – physiotherapy assistants may be asked to perform clerical tasks; a firm understanding of basic computer concepts, keyboarding, and data entry, plus using the Internet and scheduling software are needed

Detail-oriented – like any other medical professionals, physiotherapy assistants should pay close attention to details, especially when assisting patients with their therapy

Interpersonal skills – often working with patients who are in pain, frightened, and distraught, physiotherapy assistants should be compassionate, understanding, and active listeners

Tools of the Trade - Physiotherapy assistants often use the following devices and programs to perform their jobs: including , Exercise equipment (treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes), Stretching materials (resistance tubes and bands)

The ideal candidate will be dynamic, flexible, organized, self-motivated, creative, humble, and strategic. The candidate should be friendly, sensitive and enthusiastic about the job role.

Experience in developmental work and living abroad is preferred but not mandatory.
