About Shanti's Margot Murphy Women’s Cancer Program

Shanti exists to enhance the quality of life, health, and well being of people living with life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 1974, Shanti was one of the first volunteer organizations to work with terminally ill clients and by the early 1980s had distinguished itself by becoming the first community-based organization to respond to San Francisco’s growing AIDS epidemic. Building on the success of our HIV/AIDS program and responding to changing community needs, in 2001 we established our Breast Cancer Program to mitigate factors that lead to the disproportionate rates of breast cancer mortality among vulnerable San Francisco populations. In 2015, this program expanded its services to women with any type of cancer and is now called the Margot Murphy Women’s Cancer Program.

Our program offers services to mitigate the barriers women face after a cancer diagnosis. Our care navigators provide multilingual, culturally competent services, offering patient advocacy, language interpretation, help applying for social services, in-home support, appointment accompaniment, and transportation assistance. Our staff meets with clients in their homes, hospital rooms, or in our office. We work with anyone newly diagnosed, in survivorship, or in palliative care. Shanti also provides health and wellness groups and classes. Shanti is part of a larger breast cancer community, partnering with public and private hospitals in San Francisco, and working closely with social workers, medical providers, and community partners to encourage treatment adherence to reduce interruptions in care.
