Description

About Shanti's Margot Murphy Women’s Cancer Program

Shanti exists to enhance the quality of life, health, and well being of people living with life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 1974, Shanti was one of the first volunteer organizations to work with terminally ill clients and by the early 1980s had distinguished itself by becoming the first community-based organization to respond to San Francisco’s growing AIDS epidemic. Building on the success of our HIV/AIDS program and responding to changing community needs, in 2001 we established our Breast Cancer Program to mitigate factors that lead to the disproportionate rates of breast cancer mortality among vulnerable San Francisco populations. In 2015, this program expanded its services to women with any type of cancer and is now called the Margot Murphy Women’s Cancer Program.

Our program offers services to mitigate the barriers women face after a cancer diagnosis. Our care navigators provide multilingual, culturally competent services, offering patient advocacy, language interpretation, help applying for social services, in-home support, appointment accompaniment, and transportation assistance. Our staff meets with clients in their homes, hospital rooms, or in our office. We work with anyone newly diagnosed, in survivorship, or in palliative care. Shanti also provides health and wellness groups and classes. Shanti is part of a larger breast cancer community, partnering with public and private hospitals in San Francisco, and working closely with social workers, medical providers, and community partners to encourage treatment adherence to reduce interruptions in care.

Program Intern – Fall 2018

Shanti is currently seeking a resourceful, organized intern with an interest in improving women’s health, developing knowledge of community resources, and improving service delivery to vulnerable populations. An ideal intern will have experience in communications, community outreach, and administrative tasks. We are particularly interested in an intern who is flexible, creative, and not afraid to explore new ideas or methods. The primary requirement is that you have the best interest of the program and clients in mind at all times.

Duties may include:

·        Assisting Wellness Manager in the implementation of our client wellness/survivorship program

·        Use resourceful methods to gather information about community resources in San Francisco that could benefit our clients

·        Assist in managing and cleaning up client data (both digital and physical records)

·        Assist in updating our internal resource website (on wix.com)

·        Contribute to community outreach and spread the word about Shanti's services and events

·        Assist the team with various tasks to support the day-to-day function of the program

·        Assist with creating program newsletter for clients

Professional benefits:

·        Grow project management skills and work in a small team setting

·        Learn about the continuum of care that exists in San Francisco for women with cancer

·        Connect with the large network of community resource programs in San Francisco and the Bay Area

·        Participate in the Shanti Peer Support Volunteer Training

All Shanti staff are trained in the Peer Support Model, which practices compassionate and nonjudgmental listening from the heart. The intern would be encouraged to attend and complete the Peer Support Volunteer Training.

While we are unable to offer financial compensation for this internship, we are confident that you will gain a unique, valuable experience that will challenge you, enhance your leadership skills, and give you an inside perspective into the work of community-based organizations serving some of the area’s most vulnerable populations. We are happy to work with any college or university to assure that you get credit for completing an internship with us.
