Basic Field Grants Internship - Office of Program Performance (Spring 2022)

OVERVIEW: 

Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent nonprofit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. 

The Office of Program Performance is responsible for ensuring that LSC grantees provide high-quality legal services to low-income clients. OPP administers a competitive grants process and evaluates grantee performance by conducting onsite and desk reviews. This internship will support the grant award and evaluation process.  

This position will require working from an office in Washington, DC, but is remote until January. The successful candidate must live in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. 

 

BASIC FUNCTION: 

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to:  

 

  1. Gain a better understanding of the grant-making process for the delivery of civil legal aid across the country;  
  2. Acquire an intimate understanding of how the grant-making process plays out from creation of the Request For Proposal through the decision-making process; 
  3. Become skilled in Microsoft Excel and Smartsheet, which helps LSC conduct its oversight work; and 
  4. Learn time management skills while working on multiple time-sensitive projects. 

 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The intern’s principal duties and responsibilities include: 

 

  1. Assist with coordinating grant reviews, provide support to the staff reviewers, review reports of completed work, and, review funding applications and related documents;  
  2. Maintain and update databases and documents using various applications; 
  3. Provide Internet-based and other research on various topics; 
  4. Draft and edit reports and various documents; 
  5. Maintain files and information in accordance with office protocols; and 
  6. Perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate students. The ideal applicant will be dependable, self-motivated, professional, hard-working, disciplined, and demonstrate integrity. He or she will have excellent research and analytical skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, be attentive to details, and able to work both independently and on a team. He or she also will exercise good judgment and be an effective problem-solver, intellectually curious, and committed to LSC’s mission to promote equal access to justice. A high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required.   

 

This position will be part-time, with the intern working up to 20 hours per week. The internship will run from January through May 2022 with the potential to extend through the Summer. 

 

HOURLY RATE: 

 

This position is paid hourly. Hourly rate is based on class year:   

$15.00 - 1st Year Students  

$16.00 - 2nd Year Students  

$17.00 - 3rd Year Students  

$18.00 - 4th Year Students & Recent Graduates
