About Trevor

The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.

Overview of the role

Our Advocacy and Government Affairs department seeks to impact the organization’s mission through advocacy for laws and policies that will reduce suicide among LGBTQ youth and promote their emotional well-being and safety. Under the supervision of the Head of Advocacy and Government Affairs, this intern will support the day-to-day management of over 100 Advocacy volunteers and assist the staff in both state and federal work, including legislative work, policy strategy, research, and organizational outreach. Candidates will be interviewed and selected on a rolling basis.

Who you are:

  • Action-oriented. You know how to get things done. You love to set challenging goals and then develop plans to deliver and achieve them. You’ll be able to perform self-directed research
  • Fast-paced. You can move quickly and smartly. When new opportunities emerge, you move quickly to capitalize on them
  • Big picture thinker. You’re someone who thinks strategically. You love to brainstorm and come up with big bold ideas. You’ll have a general knowledge of the legislative process
  • Organized and efficient. You know how to manage complex projects. You can demonstrate excellent written and oral communications clearly and concisely. The moment you see a problem, you quickly come up with solutions and then implement them
  • Passionate. You care about LGBTQ youth. You care about saving lives. You want to come to work and feel inspired every day. You want to change the world. You’ll be able to demonstrate a background or strong interest in LGBTQ issues, civil rights, youth issues, health issues, and/or suicide prevention
  • Fun. The work we do is very serious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun. We know how to have a good time and you should too

What you’ll do:

  • Support day to day communication with advocacy volunteers supporting Trevor’s work nationwide including assigning tasks and responding to questions
  • Assist with lobbying efforts for LGBTQ-relevant bills and suicide prevention support efforts through congressional, executive, and judicial advocacy
  • Develop and forge relationships with key organizations, offices, and members of the non-profit sector to build a strong coalition for relevant advocacy needs
  • Monitor federal and state agency action and federal and state-level legislation via tracking tools and news services with regular reports
  • Build local advocacy resources for city-wide policies protecting LGBTQ youth
  • Create and maintain resources for state partners and local activists including state-based research and legislative tool-kits
  • Generate thank-you and ask letters to members of Congress and state legislators
  • Produce and analyze data and current research that is relevant to the field
  • Support and research federal and state policy projects such as our campaign to end conversion therapy or implement state requirements for suicide prevention training

Benefits:

  • Paid internship role, $14.00/hour
  • Fun office environment and passionate team
  • Meaningful work at an organization that is saving the lives of LGBTQ young people across America every day
  • The Trevor Project is an equal opportunity employer
