The American Friends Service Committee’s Internship Program is designed to engage students with the world of public service and peace and social justice issues. As an intern you will work alongside AFSC staff helping to implement current programs and achieve AFSC’s mission. You will work within a framework of a work plan and learning objectives with the opportunity to participate in activities such as client engagement and in depth research. You may work directly with clients and perform in depth research. Upon completion of the internship, you will have the opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate your experience.

Summary of Principal Responsibilities:

Legal Interns with our Community Justice Teams will work with AFSC attorneys to conduct intake interviews to determine eligibility for immigration benefits such as asylum, withholding of removal, protection under the Convention against Torture, cancellation of removal, VAWA, U Visa, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status or other immigration relief. The Intern will assist in research and case preparation for immigrants represented by AFSC. The internship will offer the opportunity to observe and participate in immigration court proceedings (detained and non-detained), as well as USCIS interviews.   

Essential Functions/Specific Responsibilities:

1.    Assist in or conduct legal screenings to determine eligibility for immigration benefits such as asylum, withholding of removal, protection under the Convention against Torture, cancellation of removal, VAWA, U Visa, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status or other immigration relief.  

2.    Research legal issues and country conditions in support of the cases of AFSC clients.

3.    Draft briefs and legal memoranda.  

4.    Gather documentation and assist with case preparation.   

5.    Translate documents or assist with interpretation, as necessary. 

6.    Participate in Community Justice Team and other AFSC meetings.  

7.    Meet regularly with a supervisor. 

Qualifications

1.    Current law school or undergraduate student.

2.    Personal experience with immigration systems a plus. 

2.    Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multicultural contexts. 

3.    Good oral and written communication skills.   

4.    Ability to communicate effectively and build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, and the public. 

5.    Ability to work effectively and comfortably with Quaker principles. 

6.    Self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and workload.   

7.    Fluency in a foreign language (Spanish preferred) in addition to English is a plus.

Compensation: $15.00 per hour - Non-Exempt – There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
