 Rural LISC supports 88 CBO partners serving more than 2,200 rural counties in 45 states. Over the last 25 years, Rural LISC’s investments in rural America have totaled $1 billion in grants, equity and low-cost loan funds. Rural LISC has leveraged this investment resulting in close to $3.6 billion from public and private sources, to produce 36,650 affordable homes and apartments, create 4.4 million square feet of commercial and community space, assist 750 businesses, create 12,500 jobs and support 20 early childhood centers.

 INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

Rural LISC seeks an organized individual to join our development and communications team, as a Communications Intern. The Intern will have a meaningful learning experience by developing communications and engagement skills such as content creation, story-telling, writing, and event planning, while gaining experience working with an established national nonprofit organization and the community development field.

The Communications Intern will be assigned learning experiences and projects to aid our community partners and external stakeholders in having the latest information about Rural LISC. The intern will help the Communications Program Officer to identify, conceptualize, design and execute collateral to boost engagement, educate and inform external audiences.

The intern can expect to work 20 hours per week in our DC. Office. This opportunity will have specific Start and End dates (these usually correspond with school semesters) will be discussed and agreed upon throughout the interview process.

Learning opportunities and key responsibilities of this internship include:

  • Work with your supervisor to establish learning and professional development goals for the internship program.
  • Support social media content across external channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn) including videos and/or infographics.
  • Assist in the creation of monthly e-newsletters.
  • Gather program related data as needed.
  • As needed, act as a liaison between LISC and photographers, graphic designers, and external content creators.
  • Write and distribute content such as blogs, articles, and press releases on social media, through email marketing, and traditional news outlets.
  • Help to maintain basic website updates.
  • Support Communications team at our annual seminar in Washington DC.

By completion of the internship program, the Intern should leave with a robust portfolio of materials that span writing samples, digital publications, media placements, and social media content and reports.

Qualifications:

  • Must be actively enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program majoring in: Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Must obtain authorization from your college or university to support this internship.
  • Interests in inclusive community development and asset framing/strength based communications, strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of the Canva, Hootsuite, Adobe, Campaign Monitor.
  • Excellent writing/communication skills with proficient understanding of style guides.
  • Knowledge of media relations.
  • Interest in learning digital communications including social media management, email marketing, media relations, and website management.
