The Jewish Federation of Chicago’s Federal Government Affairs office seeks a Sophomore/Junior/Senior undergraduate student for a 2021 internship in its Washington DC Government Affairs office. Jewish Federation received more than $400 million in 2018 in federal, state, and local government funds to help support our local network of 70 + health and human services affiliated agencies serving more than 500,000 Chicagoans of all faiths, ages, and backgrounds, as well as millions of Jews in Israel and throughout the world.

Prior exposure to government relations, nonprofits, and domestic policy is preferred. Knowledge of the Chicagoland area is helpful but not necessary. The selected candidate will gain an understanding of Congress and the Executive Branch, a variety of domestic social policy and international policy issues, and a first-hand look inside the Jewish communal world.

The candidate should have excellent communications and research skills, be able to juggle multiple projects at once, and have a solid foundation in Microsoft Office. Specific responsibilities during the internship will include:

  • Track legislation and monitor congressional hearings
  • Provide updates to Government Affairs staff
  • Prepare and update materials for Capitol Hill visits
  • Assist with all phases of preparation for special outreach events, including two advocacy missions
  • Research and draft documents related to health and human services, Israel and the Middle East, and other issues important to Jewish Federation
  • Attend coalition meetings
  • Work with Jewish Federation affiliated agencies and other Jewish organizations, including national Jewish agency partners

The Federal Policy Internship is a paid internship, part-time position with a flexible schedule, 15-20 hours per week. The internship will begin in January and end May. Dates are flexible with your school schedule. College credit for the internship is sometimes awarded.

Through Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign, Odessa Dubinsky made provisions in her will to establish and fund the Federal Policy Internship Program, which works in conjunction with Jewish Federation’s professionals based in Washington, DC. Odessa Dubinsky’s generosity benefits not only individual college students seeking to gain educational workplace experience, but also advances Jewish Federation’s task of helping our most vulnerable members of the Chicago community and Jews worldwide. Since it was established, this program has allowed college students with an interest in public policy to experience and participate in the federal policy process in Washington and to learn about the impacts these policies have on Jewish Federation’s work throughout Chicago and in communities around the world.

Interested candidates should apply with their resume and a cover letter. For more on JUF’s Government Affairs program, visit www.juf.org/gov.
