Do you enjoy being outdoors? Are you looking to promote health in Missouri communities? MobilizeGreen, a nonprofit organization focused on jumpstarting green careers for diverse (BIPOC) students, through internships, mentoring, and youth engagement is partnering with the National Park Service's Healthy Parks Healthy People program on an exciting year-long internship position for a recent (within last 5 years) college graduate.  

Position Abstract:

In partnership with the National Park Service Healthy Parks Healthy People program and the Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis, this intern will work to inspire people to improve their health and wellbeing in parks, and amplify health benefits of parks and public lands. The intern will join the National Park Service team as they look to develop science-informed resources and tools to make visiting parks easier and more relatable to all people, and promote a quality, healthy visitor experience once they are there. 

The Healthy Parks Healthy People intern will receive mentorship, training and networking opportunities with NPS staff and our partners, and will gain experience in the development and delivery of science-informed health promotion activities in national parks, interpretation and education program delivery, as well as communications and outreach campaigns. Applicants should also have familiarity or a strong interest in natural resources and public health, and helping contribute to a healthier, happier, sustainable world. This position will start in Spring 2021.

Location: Gateway Arch National Park, St. Louis MO*. 

*option to work virtually as needed

Work Environment: This position is based in St. Louis, MO. Intern will spend time in the park and in the community. Work related travel may be a possibility. 

Term:  52 weeks starting May 10, 2021

Full Time/40 hours per week.

 Job Responsibilities:

  • Connect and engage with new and first time audiences to parks through health promotion.
  • Identify current park-based health promotion programs for national parks in Missouri. 
  • Confer with park superintendents and key partners regarding Healthy Parks Healthy People and the National Park Fitness Challenge in Missouri. 
  • Assist in the design and development of web-based tools to support a National Park Fitness Challenge in Missouri.
  • Support in the development and maintenance of a national database and a What Works For Health GIS story map on health promotion.
  • Prepare an Accomplishments Report with lessons learned and opportunities for national expansion.
  • Share lessons learned as part of the NPS 100 Years of Health celebration in Washington DC.  

Experience and Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Recreation, or Public Health (also open to college seniors graduating spring 2021)
  • Strong interest in Health 
  • Comfortable connecting with community members
  • Ability to work independently and with others collaboratively on projects. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to use technology to effectively communicate, market, and disseminate information. 
  • Proficient in ESRI GIS, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. 
  • Willingness to take initiative and motivation to seek new learning opportunities.

Work Environment:

The work environment presents normal, every-day risks or discomforts typical of offices, meeting rooms, and travel situations. Most of the work will be based at the Gateway Arch National Park, with travel to national parks in Missouri, NPS Regional Office in Omaha, Nebraska and Healthy Parks Healthy People headquarters in Washington DC. Potential for fieldwork which will require walking/hiking outdoors and interacting with the public.
