Type: Part-time Internship

Stipend: Up to $10,000 based on hours and school credit options

Application Deadline: 10/15/2021

Organization Description:

The Council of Large Public Housing Authorities (CLPHA) is a non-profit, member organization that works to preserve and improve public and affordable housing through advocacy, research, policy analysis, and public education. Our members include 70 of the largest and most innovative public housing authorities across the country, collectively accounting for nearly 40 percent of the nation’s public housing stock and more than a quarter of the Housing Choice Voucher program. CLPHA members make vital services available to the more than one million low-income households they serve in federally-assisted housing.

In recent years, CLPHA has become a leader in cross systems alignment through its Housing Is Initiative. Housing Is helps broaden and deepen efforts to align housing, education, and health organizations to produce positive long-term outcomes for those experiencing poverty. CLPHA believes housing authorities are foundational to improving wellbeing for families, individuals, and communities.

Position Description:

Are you interested in the intersection of health, housing, and education? Join the Council of Large Public Housing Authorities (CLPHA) Housing Is Initiative to bring leaders across sectors together to learn from each other and plan jointly to support the wellbeing of public housing residents. We need assistance to help develop and run our 8th Annual Housing Is Summit on May 18-19, 2022 in Washington, DC.* This conference is planned to be a hybrid inperson/virtual event*. We need assistance developing the content and speakers, managing updates to the agenda and meeting materials, and organizing the meeting logistics. Beyond the Summit planning, you will also get involved in other Housing Is initiatives, such as our Center for Disaster Philanthropy-funded COVID-19 Response Grant Program and our United Healthcare sponsored Catalyst Initiative.

*The COVID-19 pandemic conditions are changing rapidly and our decision to hold an in-person portion of the event may change based on health and safety recommendations from the CDC. This decision will be made closer to the summit. We take seriously the comfort and safety of all of our CLPHA staff, including interns.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Assist in the planning and implementation of the Housing Is Summit May 18-19, 2022. This includes helping manage content for breakout sessions, coordinate with speakers and panelists, update and manage the Summit app and website, run Zoom logistics, assist with technology needs.

• Assist with other Housing Is initiatives as needed. For example, helping with our COVID-19 Response Grantee survey in November, our Housing Is working group webinars for CLPHA members, or the United Healthcare Catalyst Initiative.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

• Current or recent graduate student interested in the intersection of housing, health, and education and building cross-sector collaborations.

• Professional and able to communicate effectively with external stakeholders.

• Highly organized and able to work independently remotely.

• Willing to travel to Washington, DC for the Summit May 18-19, 2022 (as COVID-19 conditions allow)

• No special AV skills necessary beyond standard computer skills and familiarity with Zoom and Slack.

Preferred Skills:

• An understanding of the social determinants of health, systems-level community change efforts, and cross-sector collaborations.

• Experience running in-person or virtual conferences or events a plus.
