Yamba Malawi transforms children’s lives by empowering communities to break the cycle of extreme poverty and invest in their children’s futures. 

 Founded in 2006, Yamba Malawi envisions a world where strong, self-reliant communities build brighter futures for children. Through holistic livelihood interventions centered on sustainable and scalable businesses, financial management, and coaching on childhood wellbeing, Yamba Malawi empowers communities to build brighter futures for children and improve outcomes across food security, health, education, and protection. Each year, Yamba Malawi’s livelihoods program touches the lives of over 100,000 children. 

 Yamba Malawi is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a passionate team located in Lilongwe, Malawi and Brooklyn, New York.

 THE POSITION

Yamba Malawi is seeking an energetic, detail-oriented self-starter to support the Development team, with a particular focus on special events. This person will be highly organized and be a creative problem-solver. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a critical period of organizational growth while gaining first-hand experience in planning and executing an annual Gala. The Special Events & Development intern will gain valuable insight into the field of international development and the inner workings of an international NGO. 

 SAMPLE PROJECTS

  • Assist in the planning and execution of internal and external events, specifically the annual Gala (either 3/31 or 4/1)
  • Draft and compile materials for internal and external meetings
  • Conduct research on prospective individual and institutional donors who are aligned with Yamba Malawi’s mission
  • Liaise with Young Professionals Committee on events and volunteer initiatives
  • Provide support to the Development team in implementing donor stewardship strategy
  • Provide support for special projects
  • Provide support to the Operations team in collecting materials for the monthly expense report

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be passionate about the mission of the Organization
  • Recent graduate or current undergraduate or graduate student
  • Ability to handle multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with databases preferred but not required
  • Available at least 15 hours a week (in the office at least 2-3 days a week); must be available 3 days a week during the last two weeks of March
