Exciting opportunity to intern with a grassroots women's empowerment project in rural Uganda 2018!
About us WIL Uganda - Women In Leadership is a registered community based organisation based in the rural village of Busembatia in eastern Uganda, Iganga district (around 3 hours from Kampala).
Our Mission To empower women and girls with the knowledge and skills to become leaders in their own communities contributing to equitable development.
We teach five empowerment programmes for girls at 3 Secondary Schools in Busembatia, namely: Rights and Advocacy, Leadership, Career Guidance, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, and Teen Voices journalism project. We also have 3 Community Programs: Adult Literacy, Crafts, and Business Skills.
We are currently looking for enthusiastic interns preferably with experience in teaching English abroad and/or TEFL certificate to join our adult literacy team. As an adult literacy intern you will help to design interactive sessions for women in the community, as well as carrying out these sessions. Furthermore, you will design and run a Book Event class in three secondary schools.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in village life and really feel like part of the community.
During the holiday period and weekends volunteers can choose to travel to nearby Jinja Town which is a tourist hot spot where you can enjoy many tourist attractions including white water rafting, kayaking, bungee jumping, quad biking and restaurants/cafe's/bars.
Interns are accommodated in the village in safe, secure accommodation. Interns can choose to live in a host family. Applicants interested in staying in host family are required to fundraise an extra £100 to cover host families expenses if staying for 3 months.
Dependant on volunteer availability but usually 3-6 months. Happy to discuss longer or shorter placements. Arrival date is 18th June and departure 23rd August.
up to 3 month placement = £800 6 month placement = £1000
Funds cover interns accommodation, in country travel costs, lunches, airport transfers on agreed arrival date and departure (if you arrive on depart outside these dates you will have to cover your own transport) and contribution towards project costs. Funds may be fundraised online via a crowd funding page or transferred directly to organisation by bank transfer or PayPal. All funds must be received before arrival. Full training on crowd funding will be provided.
You will be required to cover
- Visa $50
- Breakfast and dinner - around $10 per week in placement
- Travel insurance
- University degree or enrolled on university course
- At least one reference by former teacher or employer;
- Interest in international development, women, economic empowerment and sustainability
- Access to digital camera and laptop to use throughout placement
- Previous experience in rural community is an advantage but not essential.
We will provide accommodation in the village, lunches during placement, all airport transfers and in country transport for project.
As needed we will work one-on-one with your university to provide academic credit hours for your internship
We will provide you with extensive experience in project management, international development, and grant research and social media for development
You will run your own projects and design your own workshops
You will get the chance to live abroad in one of the most beautiful places in the world!
