OVERVIEW

Citizens Committee for New York City helps New Yorkers—especially those in low-income areas—come together and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. We support unstaffed groups carry out community improvement projects through small grants, capacity-building workshops, and project planning assistance.

We seek a part-time intern to assist the programs team in the review process for our 2020 Neighborhood Grant program. Interested individuals should share our commitment to resident-led community change.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES

Citizens Committee awards micro-grants to resident-led groups working on self-identified community improvement projects ranging from urban agriculture to tenant organizing. The intern will help with a variety of tasks, focusing primarily on the following:

General Administrative Support: Citizens Committee awards micro-grants to resident-led groups working on self-identified community improvement projects ranging from urban agriculture to tenant organizing. As a small staff, making sure that each grant cycle runs smoothly requires a high level of administrative support. Among other tasks, you will: support the programs team in documenting our grant applications, help manage mailings, and assist with various administrative duties.

Data Management: Citizens Committee supports hundreds of groups each year; we have the most extensive database of grassroots groups in NYC. Having accurate and clean data for these groups is essential. It allows us to quickly produce reports, note trends, and identify areas for improvement, among other things. You will support us in maintaining our Salesforce data management system and input data from 2020 Neighborhood Grant applications. You will also contribute ideas for maintaining and harnessing data we collect.

Event Planning: Citizens Committee leads an orientation and community mixer for new Neighborhood Grant winners. You will help coordinate this annual celebration of new grantees and recruit volunteers to assist with the event, which draws up to 500 people.

Through these primary responsibilities, the intern will improve their communication, organizational, and project management skills. Through projects focused on data maintenance, the intern will gain experience with Excel and Salesforce, a cutting-edge online database platform that an increasing number of organizations and companies are employing. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to work with groups addressing issues related to urban planning, social justice, and environmental justice at the most grassroots level. For anyone interested in learning about grant management, this is the perfect opportunity to see a grant review process from start to finish.
