Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent nonprofit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.


ODGA is responsible for supporting other internal business units with a broad range of data and analytical projects. We use a variety of software applications to examine statistical and administrative data and develop visualizations to share findings with our internal stakeholders and civil legal aid community. We build products and knowledge to help the access to justice community make better, data-driven decisions.

 

LSC is seeking applicants local to the DC area. LSC is operating on full-time telework until January 2022, and the internship will be performed from the intern’s residence. 

 

BASIC FUNCTION: 

 

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to: 

 

  1. Build problem-solving and quantitative reasoning skills while working in a collaborative, mission-oriented environment; and 
  2. Hone writing and organizational skills while working on a congressionally funded project concerning eviction.  

 

The intern's hours may be up to 20 hours per week. The internship will run from October through December 2021, with the potential to extend through the Spring on a part-time basis. Candidates interested in an extended internship are encouraged to apply.  

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The intern's principal duties and responsibilities include: 

 

  • Verify and query collected administrative court data using SQL. Only basic proficiency with SQL is needed.  

 

  • Developing data visualizations using Tableau and other applications, e.g., R Shiny or Google Charts. 

 

  • Conducting bibliographic searches of current research relating to eviction and housing and maintaining the team’s Mendeley account. 

 

  • Conducting research and writing brief summaries of findings for publication. 

 

  • Addressing periodic requests for data/literature. 

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

 

General: 

LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate or graduate students studying Urban Planning, Political Science, Sociology, Criminology, Computer Science, Data Science, or other related fields. Excellent communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and quantitative reasoning are required. The ideal candidate will be curious, passionate, hard-working, and disciplined. 

 

Technical/Specialized: 

Knowledge of project management tools, specifically Trello is preferred. Basic proficiency with data visualization software is required, and basic proficiency with a statistical software package, e.g., R/Python/STATA, is also required.  

 

HOURLY RATE: 

 

This position is paid hourly. Hourly rate is based on class year:  

$15.00 - 1st Year Students  

$16.00 - 2nd Year Students  

$17.00 - 3rd Year Students  

$18.00 - 4th Year Students & Recent Graduates
