Legislative Intern - Government Relations and Public Affairs (Spring 2022)

OVERVIEW:

Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent nonprofit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. The Office of Government Relations & Public Affairs (GRPA) is responsible for managing LSCs communications and relationship with Congress, the Executive Branch, the media, and the general public. This position will require working from an office in Washington, DC, but is remote until January. The successful candidate must live in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to:

  1. Understand the relationship between legislative affairs and communications.
  2. Acquire a sound understanding of how the federal appropriations process works.

The intern's hours may be up to 20 hours per week. The internship will run from January through May 2022

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intern’s principal duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Responding to congressional inquiries;
  2. Tracking legislation and monitoring congressional activity;
  3. Researching and writing materials for congressional staff and LSC publications;
  4. Updating databases; and
  5. Other research projects as assigned.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

General:

LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate, graduate, and law students. Ideal candidates can work independently, have excellent research and writing skills, and an interest in public service, government or congressional affairs, and public policy.

Specific/Technical:

The intern needs to have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office projects (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

This position is paid on an hourly basis in accordance with the following rate schedule:
