Overview:

Do you enjoy problem solving, quantitative reasoning, and technology? Are you interested in working in a collaborative, friendly mission-oriented environment? If so, we invite you to consider a paid internship with the Office of Data Governance and Analysis (ODGA) team at the Legal Services Corporation! ODGA seeks an intern to contribute to the development and refinement of data visualizations and tools – and the data that drive them – in support of the work of LSC and its grantees.

Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent nonprofit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.

LSC is seeking applicants local to the DC area. Depending on the status of Covid-19 related telework in the Spring, the internship may be fully remote, partially in-person, or fully in-person. If LSC returns to in-person work, the intern will be expected to report to the LSC office.

Basic Function:

ODGA is responsible for supporting other internal business units with a broad range of data and analytical projects. We use a variety of software applications to examine statistical and administrative data and develop visualizations and tools to share findings with our internal stakeholders and civil legal aid community. We build products and knowledge to help the access to justice community make better, data-driven decisions.

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to:

·      Gain experience with the process of preparing, building, and refining data tools and visualizations that connect quantitative and administrative data to practical needs and applications;

·      Build data visualization, data wrangling, web development, and problem-solving skills; and

·      Hone project management skills while working on multiple time-sensitive projects.

The intern’s hours will be up to 20 hours per week. The internship will run from December 1, 2020, through May 21, 2021, with the potential to extend through the Summer.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intern’s principle duties and responsibilities include:

1.     Use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to help develop, test, and improve web-based data visualizations, tools, and related content for use by legal aid providers, advocates, and others;

2.     Use R or Python to prepare, clean, and validate data for use in tools and visualizations;

3.     Prepare other resources (i.e. map layers) for use in tools and visualizations;

4.     Create training resources, such as how-to videos and written guides, for end users of these data resources.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

General:

LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate or graduate students studying data science, statistics, public health, social sciences, or other quantitative fields.

Technical/Specialized:

The ideal candidate will have some experience working with JavaScript (i.e. to create web pages or other web resources) in addition to a solid comfort level working with data in R or Python, and will have an interest in honing and combining these skills. They will have excellent communication, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning skills, and will be able to take initiative and pursue self-guided learning.

Experience using common web visualization libraries (D3.js, Leaflet, Mapbox), setting up a local development environment, using Git, and/or working in Amazon Web Services is a plus.
