C&O Canal Public Programs & Community Engagement Fellow

Overview

The community non-profit Georgetown Heritage invites interested candidates to apply for an exciting six-month part-time fellowship to assist with the creation and implementation of public programs on the one-mile section of the C&O Canal National Historical Park in Georgetown.

 

The Public Programs & Community Engagement Fellow will contribute meaningfully to an exciting and important endeavor to revitalize, activate, and interpret the National Park Service assets in Georgetown into inviting, inclusive, and inspiring destinations, with an initial focus on the Georgetown section of the C&O Canal National Historical Park - a popular National Park and national landmark that has fallen into disrepair.

 

Responsibilities

While the restoration of the C&O Canal is a long term effort, Georgetown Heritage and the National Park Service are working to bring activity and life back to the canal in the short term. Georgetown Heritage is launching a season of pilot programs in 2018 to begin bringing people back to the Canal, building a community of park stewards, and begin testing and evaluating educational and interpretive themes and concepts.

Under the supervision of Georgetown Heritage’s Director of Public Programs and Partnerships, the Public Programs Fellow will:

Handle program logistics such as:

  • setting up event listings and registration on the organization’s website (using SquareSpace)
  • communicating with program attendees before and after each event/program
  • Attend programs, ensure everything runs smoothly, provide information about GH (such as brochures and other materials)

 

Manage monthly Canal Clean-Up events:

  • Recruit volunteers
  • Coordinate with National Park Service staff to arrange tasks for volunteers
  • Coordinate with Georgetown BID staff to arrange for all necessary tools and materials
  • Attend and oversee Clean-Up events (one Saturday each month, 10 am - 12 noon)


Assist in pilot program development:

  • Brainstorm program ideas based on themes and topics from Georgetown Canal Interpretation & Education Plan
  • Research potential partners
  • Create and manage evaluation process for pilot programs
  • Develop, send and track surveys for program participants
  • Present findings to Georgetown Heritage and the National Park Service upon completion of Fellowship.


Communications and Marketing

  • Draft content for monthly newsletters
  • Make updates to the website
  • Contribute to social media
  • Help develop our collection of images


Community Outreach

  • Conduct interviews and Canal user surveys
  • Assist with meetings with project stakeholders, community groups

 

Administrative tasks

  • Scheduling meetings and assisting with meeting set-up (printing packets, etc.)
  • Other duties as determined by candidate’s skills, knowledge, and interests.

 

Salary

The salary for this fellowship is $300/week for part time work (15-20 hours per week) for a six month period.


Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a Bachelor’s Degree and demonstrated interest in public programs in parks and/or historic sites. This position is well suited to a graduate student.


  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Office Suite and familiarity with basic website design (Squarespace) and social media
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and experience working with the public.
  • The ideal candidate for this Fellowship will have a self-starting, entrepreneurial work ethic and a desire and ability to “get the job done”. S/he will be energetic, strategic, flexible, collaborative and kind, and have a commitment to the multi-faceted mission of Georgetown Heritage.
