Youth Advocacy Corps (YAC) is recruiting young adults (aged 16-24) from New York City to be part of the 2021-2022 Mental Health Awareness Project (MHAP). All participants will be paid a stipend to become Mental Health Peer Advocates and will meet virtually 1-2 times per week through the end of the academic year of 2021-2022.

Mission: YAC’s mission is to address systemic inequity by empowering and mobilizing young people to become advocates, service providers, and agents of change in their own communities. MHAP, founded by a YAC alum, focuses on raising awareness about the importance of mental and overall wellness, bringing attention to the stigma and the need for care, while also mobilizing young people from the community to become leaders and agents of change.

Tasks, Responsibilities, and Projects: During the year, MHAP Advocates will work throughout NYC and:

  • Receive extensive training on mental health and health justice issues;
  • Learn to identify, organize, and map existing mental health services available to communities;
  • Serve as community peer advocates working to normalize discussions around mental and overall well being and connecting with local providers;
  • Spread awareness through educational workshops and the provision of resources and information at community-based help desks and forums;
  • Play a major role in leading our current mental health campaign, advocating for increased and more culturally and linguistically competent services;
  • Develop and implement culturally sensitive and appropriate education and social media campaigns and websites, and coordinate community efforts with local government and service providers to identify the gaps in care
  • Promote efforts to increase screening and early identification of mental health problems, including substance use; improve awareness about bullying, suicide prevention, and early intervention for trauma-exposed adolescents.
