10-15 hours a week

A pioneering Brooklyn-based performance nonprofit founded in 2003, ISSUE Project Room presents projects by interdisciplinary artists that expand the boundaries of artistic practice and stimulate critical dialogue in the broader community. ISSUE serves as a leading cultural incubator, facilitating the commission and premiere of innovative new works spanning genres of music, dance, literature, and film.

ISSUE offers a range of opportunities for interns to gain exposure and contribute to the inner-workings of a nonprofit organization presenting experimental time-based arts. Internships require a commitment of approximately one day a week at ISSUE’s East Village office, and 2-3 performances per month primarily at ISSUE’s theater in downtown Brooklyn. Internships are unpaid, though academic credit is available where applicable, and interns receive free admission to events.

Interns work with members of ISSUE's staff in one of the following capacities:

Development

Assist ISSUE's Development Director research proposals that match our programming and fundraising initiatives. Work with staff to ensure grants timelines are met including assisting in the drafting of proposals. Development volunteers also assist in regular operations for our Membership and Donor programs. When applying to the Development Internship, please provide a 1-2 page writing sample.

General Operations

General Operations Interns learn about the ins-and-outs of live productions by working with ISSUE staff to facilitate events with a wide variety of performers and artists. Interns aid in daily operations, aiding the staff to organize and operate evening events.

Marketing & Outreach

Assist ISSUE's Marketing & Communications Director to generate interest and spread the word about ISSUE's productions via online media and social networks. Gain experience in event production and promotion strategies, embark on research projects on ISSUE artists, and create online content with materials from ISSUE's audio and video archives.

Audio/Video Archiving

Help ISSUE's Technical and Marketing & Communications Directors record, edit, catalog and share audio and video from ongoing and previous performances in digital format. Must be organized and meticulous! Archiving volunteers are expected to help out with the general event operations at ISSUE as well. Experience with Reaper and Adobe Premiere is a plus!

Technical/Production

Technical/Production interns assist ISSUE’s Technical Director and Audio Engineers to setup and breakdown equipment according to the specific requirements of each artist and performance. Interns help with audio recording, soundchecks, and preparing ISSUE’s theater for events. Experience or training in live sound production is preferred, and a flexible schedule is required for availability on the afternoon of each performance.
