We are calling the best and the brightest to help Fiji prepare for the climate crisis

Are you a law student or recent law graduate with a dedicated interest in human rights, international law, or climate change?

Spend Summer 2020 in Fiji—one of the most beautiful places on Earth—helping its people and government, along with other Pacific Island peoples, prepare for the climate crisis

EXPECT TO

  • Learn about climate change and human rights protection for the environment at the frontlines, and see how rising sea levels and temperatures are already affecting Pacific Island states
  • Get practical legal experience on international climate change issues
  • Directly advise and support the government of Fiji and other Pacific Island states
  • Prepare a climate litigation strategy for Fiji and other Pacific Island states
  • Explore and experience one of the most beautiful places on Earth
  • End the summer by preparing a mock case to a panel of real judges, or a mock legislative agenda to a panel of real parliamentarians from Pacific Island states on climate change resilience and litigation strategies

PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE

  • Week 1—International law and the climate change framework
  • Week 2—The scale of the damage of climate change
  • Week 3—International law of government liability; venues for government liability; common defences
  • Week 4—International law of corporate tortfeasors
  • Week 5—The law of climate refugees
  • Week 6—Alternative theories; climate change as an infringement of self-determination; or a crime against humanity
  • Week 7—Assessment of current situation in Tuvalu (week long trip); or for other students who wish not to travel, break week in Fiji to explore climate change repercussions in Fiji
  • Week 8—Practice and procedure before a trial court and parliamentary body; effective public interest advocacy
  • Week 9—What does the world look like after the climate crisis has been solved?
  • Week 10—Opening arguments to the Court regarding climate liability; and Parliamentary Debate before Parliament
