Description

We are seeking a self-sufficient, passionate researcher who is interested in improving outcomes for first-generation, low-income students of color. This position will focus on the landscape of local scholarship programs, the best practices of organizations that serve similar demographic groups, and any gaps that a new program could potentially fill. The EPAAF Research Program Internship will be driven by these questions:

  1. What scholarship programs and foundations already exist to support first-generation, low income students of color?
  2. What structures and processes do these programs employ? What are their best practices?
  3. What insights and recommendations do scholarship recipients, potential scholarship recipients, and their families have?
  4. How can we launch an effective, community-responsive scholarship program and/or foundation?

Through a collaborative process, you will work with the EPAAF Team and a local philanthropist to develop plans for a new scholarship fund for EPAA graduates. This opportunity will require approximately 20 hours per week. EPAAF can offer internship credits. Pay rate will start at $20-$30/hour depending on experience. The duration of this internship will be 6-8 weeks.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborate with the EPAAF Team to conduct research on scholarship programs and foundations. This may include interviews with community members, connections with other organizations, and the analysis and synthesis of findings. This intern will be expected to attend weekly team meetings and weekly meetings with their project coordinator.

Project Deliverables:

  • Landscape Analysis: Produce a report that outlines research on similar scholarship organizations and foundations, including average award amounts, selection criteria, selection process, and other support services offered.
  • Recommendations: Share a report on best practices for serving first-generation, low income communities of color through scholarship funds and suggestions for launching a new scholarship fund/foundation.

Requirements

  • Passion for supporting first-generation students and their families
  • Commitment to a respectful, assets-based approach
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort with phone conversations and interviews
  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and adjust in order to meet project objectives
  • Strong reporting, analytic, and writing skills
  • Willingness to be persistent, self-directed, and take initiative
  • Proficiency with Excel, Google Sheets, and data sets
  • Some experience with qualitative and quantitative research (preferred)
