Job description

  • Position is full-time based in New York, NY, and eligible for academic credit.
  • Provide qualitative research, policy analysis, and communications support to the organizational teams, including Policy & Advocacy, Legal, Community Development. They will support in-progress programs and initiatives, and assist the Policy & Advocacy team in responding to ad hoc research and analysis requests. 
  • Analyze and track state legislation on hate crimes, religious freedom in workplaces, and law enforcement training.
  • Research UCR and NIBRS law enforcement reports of hate crimes and hate incidents through Freedom of Information Requests.
  • Examples of specific projects and areas of focus could include, but are not limited to 1) addressing hate crimes affecting the Sikh American community and other similarly situated communities vulnerable to hate crime; 2) survey of civil rights issues of importance to the Sikh community; 3) improving civic engagement; and 4) developing policy briefs on emerging trends of religious freedom, hate crime, employment discrimination, and police profiling.

Requirements

  • Must be at least a college undergraduate senior to apply. Graduate students strongly preferred. Applicant must have a degree related to Politics, Government, Public Administration, Policy, Law, or Communications.
  • Strong writing and oral communication skills are imperative.
  • Experience in legal research and analysis or FOIA requests.
  • Demonstrated interest in civil rights, politics, or journalism.
  • Candidates should have initiative, be highly organized, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines, and attentive to detail. 
  • Commitment to teamwork, good interpersonal skills, can-do positive attitude, and professional etiquette.
