Overview of the Human Rights Foundation

 HRF is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies and authoritarian regimes. We focus on over 90 countries where individual freedoms and liberties are most at risk, and where democracies are non-existent or fraudulent. Our work includes effective campaigns to free political prisoners, international events such as the Oslo Freedom Forum, the education of U.S. students on the value and fragility of individual rights and democracy, and programs such as Flash Drives for Freedom that publicize human rights violators and directly support dissidents and human rights defenders at risk.  


Overview of the position

The Communications Intern will implement an effective and engaging social media strategy that includes creating, editing, and posting content on HRF’s social media channels. He/she will assist in further developing strategies to increase social media engagement, online traffic, followers, and action-rates for advocacy and fundraising.

The Communications Intern reports to the Director of Communications.


Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Communications and Communications Associate with a heavy focus on social media
  • Work independently and with a team to explore and implement creative digital strategies to increase traffic, subscribers, and action-rates; make recommendations for social content and digital media tools
  • Support digital content development process to include writing and editing web, email, and social media messaging; proactively engage existing and new supporters online
  • Keep up-to-date on digital media, social media and web industry standards and trends
  • Handle requests sent to HRF’s info account and respond to messages on social media channels
  • Onsite and online support of HRF events (posting live on social media, general support)
  • Assist with the organization of digital assets and other related administrative work
  • Work on special projects as needed and assigned by the Communications team


Requirements

  • Demonstrated interest in human rights
  • Is up to date on current events, particularly as they relate to our work and international human rights issues
  • Broad understanding of social networking with examples of current and successful uses of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Medium and other sites
  • Excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a very fast-paced, often rapidly-changing environment
  • Stress tolerance and resilience, sense of humor, highly organized, attention to detail
  • Preferred:
  • Familiarity with MailChimp, Meltwater,, and Wordpress
  • Proficiency using social media monitoring and analytics tools
  • Knowledge of video editing or design software
