The National College Attainment Network (www.ncan.org) announces a full-time communications intern opportunity in its Washington, D.C., office. We are seeking a motivated junior or senior undergraduate student or a graduate student with strong writing and analytical skills and an interest in college access/success, financial aid, and/or higher education policy and advocacy.

Primary Responsibility:

This Communications Intern’s primary responsibility will be to expand and promote NCAN’s policy communications and advocacy work through blog posts, newsletter articles, and collaboration with NCAN members.

The intern will share stories (often of NCAN members and the students they serve) and advocate for policies and programs including:

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) simplification.
  • The federal Pell Grant program for students from low-income families.
  • Other financial aid programs that help underserved students obtain a postsecondary education, including Federal Work-Study, AmeriCorps, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants.
  • College access/success organizations that support underserved students.

The intern will also have social media duties (Twitter, Facebook, and occasionally LinkedIn and YouTube) related to these areas, and they may attend local events focused on education policy and advocacy.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate has experience with education journalism, communications, or policy (through work, volunteer experience, or completing first-year graduate studies); an interest in higher education issues; and the ability to communicate complex policy topics to a general audience. The candidates most likely to succeed will be strong writers.

Candidates must be pursuing an undergraduate- or graduate-level degree. This opportunity is open to all majors, as we know great writers come from a variety of academic backgrounds.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite is a must, and strong social media skills are preferred. Graphic design and/or video editing skills are a plus.

Through this position, the intern will gain improved writing skills and learn more about higher education policy and advocacy, and how nonprofits engage in policy work.

Employment Specifics

This position is for summer 2020, starting in early to mid-May and ending in late August or early September. The internship is full time (37.5 hours per week), paid at a rate of $15 to $20 an hour, depending on a candidate’s level of education and expertise.

The position is based in NCAN’s office (1001 Connecticut Ave. NW, Suite 300, Washington, D.C. 20036) and is not eligible for telework.
